Kunming to Chengdu by Train: Times, Stations & Tickets

The new Chengdu–Kunming railway is one of the great mountain rail lines anywhere — and it links Yunnan's spring-time capital with Sichuan's in around six to seven hours. Here is how it works in practice.

Kunming to Chengdu by Train: Times, Stations & Tickets

Route overview

The rebuilt Chengdu–Kunming line (opened along its new corridor in 2022) is not a 350 km/h route — trains run at around 160 km/h on CR-type sets — but it slashes the old journey from nearly 20 hours to roughly 6–7.5 hours, with a few departures a day. Second-class fares start from around ¥260–300. The route tunnels and viaducts its way through the Hengduan mountains along valleys the old line hugged for decades; if you care about scenery more than speed, this is arguably the most beautiful train ride into Chengdu. Schedules change several times a year — always check live times and fares on 12306 or Trip.com before booking.

Which station?

Most departures leave from Kunming South Railway Station — the same high-speed hub used for trains to Guilin and Guangzhou — connected to the city centre by Metro Line 1 in around 30 minutes. Some services use Kunming Station itself, closer to downtown; check your ticket. In Chengdu, trains arrive at Chengdu South or Chengdu East; Chengdu South is often the more central arrival for travellers staying near Chunxi Road or the People's Park area. Both stations are on the metro network.

Ticket classes

  • Second class (二等座) — 3+2 seating; comfortable enough for this route's length, with sockets at most seats.
  • First class (一等座) — 2+2 layout; a modest upgrade worth taking if available.
  • Sleeper options — some services or parallel conventional trains offer soft sleepers if you prefer to travel overnight.

How to book

Book on 12306 (official, English interface, passport registration) or Trip.com, which accepts foreign cards. E-tickets are the norm — your passport is scanned at the gates, so carry the document you booked with. Departures are less frequent than on the main eastern corridors, so if you have a fixed date, book several days ahead; around holidays, book the moment tickets are released. Our local guides can suggest realistic timings if you are chaining Kunming, Chengdu and beyond.

On board & arrival tips

This is a ride to stay awake for: the line crosses deep gorges, rivers and terraced hillsides for hours. Signal comes and goes in the long tunnels, so download everything in advance. Food is trolley-based with a dining car on most services, plus boiling water for noodles and tea. On arrival in Chengdu, the metro gets you downtown quickly; if the panda base is on tomorrow's plan, remember it opens early — our Chengdu private tours handle the timing for you. FAQ

Is the Kunming–Chengdu train scenic?

Extremely — mountain valleys, big rivers and long viaducts for most of the route. It is a destination in itself for rail fans.

Why is it slower than other high-speed routes?

The mountainous terrain limits speeds to around 160 km/h. The trade-off is some of the best scenery in Chinese rail travel.

Kunming South or Kunming Station?

Check your ticket — departures split between them. Kunming South is the modern hub; Kunming Station is nearer the old centre.

Can I continue from Chengdu to Leshan or Dujiangyan?

Yes — both are easy high-speed or intercity hops from Chengdu; see our Chengdu to Leshan and Chengdu to Dujiangyan guides.
