Chengdu to Dujiangyan by Train: Times, Stations & Tickets

Under an hour from downtown Chengdu stands a 2,300-year-old irrigation system still doing its job — with misty Mount Qingcheng behind it. Here is how the train leg works.

Chengdu to Dujiangyan by Train: Times, Stations & Tickets

Route overview

The Chengdu–Dujiangyan intercity railway (the Chengguan line) runs regular C-class trains from Chengdu towards the irrigation system and Mount Qingcheng, with services roughly every 30–60 minutes through the day. Journey time is around 30–50 minutes, and second-class fares are tiny — from around ¥10–15. It is the cheapest big day trip in the Chengdu area and pairs naturally with a second half-day at either the irrigation park or the mountain. Schedules change several times a year — always check live times and fares on 12306 or Trip.com before booking.

Which station?

Trains depart from Chengdu Station (the classic north-station by the city wall) or from Xipu, a suburban interchange — some journeys involve a same-platform transfer at Xipu, which is easier than it sounds. Check your ticket carefully for the departure point. Arrivals: Dujiangyan Station sits in the town, a 15–20 minute taxi or bus ride from the irrigation-system park gate, while Qingchengshan Station (some trains continue there) drops you close to the front mountain of Mount Qingcheng. Choose based on which sight leads your day.

Ticket classes

  • Second class (二等座) — the only class that matters here; reserve-style seating on a short suburban hop.
  • First class (一等座) — occasionally available; unnecessary for 40 minutes.
  • No standing tickets needed — frequencies are high enough that you can usually just take the next train if plans shift.

How to book

Book on 12306 (official, English interface, passport registration) or Trip.com with a foreign card; tickets are cheap enough that same-day purchase is normal on weekdays. E-tickets apply — your passport is scanned at the gate, so carry it. On weekends and holidays the line gets busy with domestic visitors, so book mornings ahead then. Once at the park, you will want WeChat or Alipay for entrance tickets and shuttle buses — our payments guide walks through setting both up before you land.

On board & arrival tips

Think of it as a metro with scenery: no dining car, short ride, small bags only. At Dujiangyan, the irrigation system park takes 2–3 hours — walk the Anlan rope bridge and the path along the ancient channel for the best engineering views. Mount Qingcheng deserves its own half-day of stairways and temples; doing both in one day is possible but rushed. If you would rather trade logistics for storytelling, our Chengdu private tours run this day trip with a driver and local guide — the history of Li Bing's waterworks lands much better with someone narrating.

FAQ

Train or private car to Dujiangyan?

The train is fast and cheap, but adds station transfers at both ends. A private car lets you combine Dujiangyan and Qingchengshan easily in one day.

Which station for Mount Qingcheng?

Take a train that continues to Qingchengshan Station — it is much closer to the mountain gate than Dujiangyan Station.

Can I visit both sights in one day?

Yes: irrigation system in the morning, front mountain in the afternoon — but start early and expect a lot of walking.

Do I need to book in advance?

Weekdays, usually not. Weekends and Chinese holidays, yes — morning trains sell out.
