Nicknamed the Spring City for its year-round mild climate, Kunming is Yunnan's relaxed gateway and a worthy stop in itself. Hike the karst pinnacles of the Stone Forest, watch gulls wheel over Dianchi Lake in winter, and use it as the launchpad for Dali, Lijiang and Shangri-La. Great for first-timers and overlanders.

Kunming, the capital of Yunnan Province in southwestern China, is known as the 'Spring City' for its year-round mild climate and flowers that bloom in every season. With a history spanning over 2,400 years, it was a key stop on the ancient Southern Silk Road and later a wartime gateway during World War II. Today it is a vibrant, multi-ethnic metropolis where Han, Yi, Bai, Dai and other minority cultures blend, and where modern high-rises stand beside ancient temples and traditional courtyard houses.
The city spreads around the northern shore of Dianchi Lake, with the Western Hills rising to the west and the long lake stretching south. Wuhua and Panlong form the historic and commercial heart, Guandu and Xishan are busy residential and university districts, while Chenggong to the southeast is the new government and education hub. The city's layout is relaxed, with wide boulevards, green parks and a growing metro network connecting the main sights.
For travelers, Kunming is both a destination and a gateway to Yunnan's wonders. You can wander the flower and bird market, admire the 1,000-year-old Yuantong Temple, stroll along Green Lake, or take a boat on Dianchi Lake. The Stone Forest, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, lies just an hour away. With its eternal spring weather, diverse cuisine and easy access to Dali, Lijiang and Xishuangbanna, Kunming is the perfect first taste of China's southwest.
Kunming covers an area of about 21,473 km² and has a population of over 8.5 million. It administers 7 urban districts, 1 county-level city and 6 counties. The city is famous for its eternal spring climate and is the political, economic and cultural center of Yunnan Province.

Kunming, the capital of Yunnan Province, is a high-altitude city (1,891 m) with a mild climate often described as eternal spring. It is the political, economic and cultural hub of southwestern China and a gateway to Southeast Asia. The city is home to 26 ethnic minorities, adding vibrant cultural diversity to its streets, markets and festivals.
The urban area is centered around Wuhua and Panlong districts, where you'll find the main railway station, shopping streets and historic sites. Green Lake Park is a local favorite for relaxation, while the Western Hills and Dianchi Lake offer natural escapes. The new district of Chenggong is a modern extension with universities and government offices.
Kunming Changshui International Airport (KMG) is a major hub with direct flights from across China and many international destinations. The airport is about 25 km northeast of downtown, connected by Metro Line 6 and airport buses. Kunming South Railway Station is a high-speed rail hub with trains to Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Guilin, Dali and Lijiang. The older Kunming Railway Station serves conventional trains.
Within the city, the metro network (lines 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6) covers most attractions and is cheap and efficient. Buses are extensive but can be crowded. Taxis and ride-hailing apps like Didi are readily available. For Dianchi Lake and the Western Hills, you can take a cable car or bus. Bicycles and e-scooters are popular for short trips.
Kunming's cuisine is a delightful mix of Yunnan's ethnic flavors, with fresh ingredients and a love for wild herbs, mushrooms and rice noodles. The city is famous for 'Crossing the Bridge' rice noodles (过桥米线), steam-pot chicken (汽锅鸡), and various mushroom dishes. Street food is abundant, especially in night markets and around universities.
Kunming offers a mix of modern malls and traditional markets. You can shop for ethnic handicrafts, flowers, tea and local specialties. The city is a major flower producer, so the Dounan Flower Market is a must-visit. For daily shopping, Nanping Street and Kunming Old Street are popular.
Kunming's nightlife is relaxed and diverse, from lively night markets to chic bars and live music venues. The area around Green Lake and Wenlin Street is popular with expats and locals alike. You can enjoy local snacks, craft beer, and sometimes traditional performances.
Kunming enjoys a mild climate year-round, but the best time to visit is from March to May when flowers bloom, and from September to November with clear skies and comfortable temperatures. Summers are rainy but not too hot, while winters are dry and sunny, though mornings can be chilly.
