Cruise the Li River past karst peaks to Yangshuo, cycle countryside villages and watch cormorant fishing at sunset — the scenery on the ¥20 note, in real life.

Guilin, in the northeast of Guangxi in southern China, is one of the country's most celebrated landscapes, a place whose limestone karst peaks, winding rivers and misty caves have inspired painters and poets for more than a thousand years. Founded as a commandery town in the Qin dynasty, it grew into a prosperous administrative and cultural centre on the route between the Central Plains and the far south. Its name, meaning 'forest of osmanthus', comes from the fragrant trees that still line its streets each autumn.
The city proper spreads along the Li River and its tributaries, with the compact central districts of Xiufeng, Diecai, Xiangshan and Qixing holding most of the historic sights, hotels and restaurants. Beyond them, the landscape opens into the rural counties of Yangshuo, Lingchuan and Longsheng, where the karst towers rise straight from rice paddies and the famous Li River cruise drifts past water buffalo, bamboo groves and fishing villages.
Travellers come to Guilin to slow down: to float down the Li River on a bamboo raft, cycle through Yangshuo's countryside, climb the stone steps of Fubo Hill for a panorama, and explore the vast chambers of Reed Flute Cave. Evenings bring the Two Rivers and Four Lakes night cruise and the illuminated cormorant fishing shows. It is a destination of gentle adventure, where the scenery itself is the main attraction.
Guilin covers about 27,800 km² and has a population of roughly 5.3 million, administered as 6 urban districts and 11 counties (including 2 autonomous counties). Its karst landscape is a UNESCO Global Geopark, and the Li River scenic area is one of China's most famous natural treasures.

Guilin is a prefecture-level city in Guangxi, southern China, famous for its karst mountains, rivers and caves. The city centre is compact and walkable, with the Li River forming its eastern edge and the Two Rivers and Four Lakes system threading through the downtown. Xiufeng, Diecai, Xiangshan and Qixing districts hold the main hotels, restaurants and sights such as Elephant Trunk Hill and Fubo Hill.
Beyond the urban core, the countryside of Yangshuo, Lingchuan and Longsheng offers dramatic scenery: the Li River winds past bamboo groves and water buffalo, while the Longji Rice Terraces cascade down mountainsides. The region is a UNESCO Global Geopark, and the Li River scenic area is protected for its outstanding natural beauty.
Guilin Liangjiang International Airport (KWL) serves domestic and international flights, with direct connections to major Chinese cities and some Asian hubs. Guilin Railway Station and Guilin North Station offer high-speed trains from Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Changsha, Guiyang and other cities. Buses connect the airport and stations to the city centre.
Within Guilin, public buses and taxis are cheap and convenient. For the Li River cruise, most travellers take a bus or taxi to the Zhujiang or Mopanshan pier. In Yangshuo, bicycles and electric scooters are the best way to explore the countryside, and bamboo rafts are a popular way to see the river up close.
Guilin cuisine is part of Guangxi's broader culinary tradition, known for its fresh river fish, rice noodles and spicy, sour flavours influenced by neighbouring Hunan and Guizhou. The city's signature dish is Guilin rice noodles, a breakfast staple of silky noodles in a savoury broth topped with braised beef, crispy soybeans and pickled vegetables. Other local specialities include beer fish from Yangshuo, stuffed Li River snails, and oil tea from the Zhuang and Dong communities.
Guilin's shopping scene ranges from modern malls to lively street markets. The Zhengyang Pedestrian Street in the city centre is the main shopping artery, with department stores, boutiques and snack stalls. For local crafts and souvenirs, head to the Yangshuo West Street or the night markets along Binjiang Road. Popular buys include Guilin rice noodles (dried), osmanthus products, bamboo carvings, and ethnic textiles from the Zhuang and Miao communities.
Guilin's nightlife is relaxed and scenic. The Two Rivers and Four Lakes night cruise is a highlight, with illuminated pagodas, bridges and performances along the water. In the city centre, bars and live-music venues cluster around Zhengyang Pedestrian Street and Binjiang Road. Yangshuo's West Street is famous for its lively bars, cafes and evening shows, including the Impression Sanjie Liu light show on the Li River.
Guilin has a humid subtropical climate with mild winters and hot, rainy summers. The best time to visit is from April to October, when the landscape is lush and the Li River is at its most scenic. Spring and autumn offer comfortable temperatures and clear skies, while summer can be hot and humid with occasional heavy rain. Winter is cooler and drier, with fewer crowds and misty karst views.
