Beijing, the capital of China, is the country's political and cultural heart and a city that has served as an imperial capital for centuries. Its landmarks read like a timeline of Chinese civilization: the Forbidden City, the Temple of Heaven, the Summer Palace and the Ming Tombs are all UNESCO World Heritage Sites, while the Great Wall at Badaling and Mutianyu stretches across the mountains just outside the city. Tiananmen Square remains the nation's symbolic center. For a taste of everyday life, wander the hutongs, step into a courtyard home, catch a Peking opera performance and try roast duck and classic Beijing snacks. Ideal for history lovers, first-time visitors to China and anyone wanting a deep dive into traditional culture.
