Beijing to Chengdu by High-Speed Train: Schedules, Stations & Tickets

The bullet train from the capital to the panda capital is one of China's great rail journeys — about eight hours through the Qinling mountains. Here is what our guides tell travellers before they book.

Beijing to Chengdu by High-Speed Train: Schedules, Stations & Tickets

Route overview

High-speed G-class trains run from Beijing to Chengdu along the Beijing–Xi'an and Xi'an–Chengdu corridors, the latter boring straight through the Qinling range in a chain of long tunnels. Journey time is around 7.5–8.5 hours, with roughly 8–12 departures a day spread from early morning to mid-afternoon. Second-class seats start from around ¥720, first class from around ¥1,150, and business class from around ¥2,200. A handful of overnight conventional trains also run this route, but most visitors take the daytime bullet train. Schedules change several times a year — always check live times and fares on 12306 or Trip.com before booking.

Which station?

Most departures leave from Beijing West Railway Station, just inside the 2nd Ring Road on Line 7 and Line 9 of the metro; a few run from Beijing Fengtai, also on Line 10 and Line 16. Double-check your ticket — the two are not interchangeable. In Chengdu, trains arrive at Chengdu East Railway Station, about 15–20 minutes from the city centre by Metro Line 2 or Line 7, with taxis taking a similar time outside rush hour. If your hotel sits near Chunxi Road or Taikoo Li, allow around 30 minutes door to door.

Ticket classes

  • Second class (二等座) — 3+2 seating, reclining, tray table, power socket. Perfectly comfortable for eight hours for most travellers.
  • First class (一等座) — 2+2 seating with more legroom and a wider seat; worth the upgrade on a route this long, especially for taller passengers.
  • Business class (商务座) — lie-flat pods in a quiet carriage. Prices approach a discounted flight, but it is a genuinely restful way to cross the country.

How to book

You can book on the official 12306 app or website (English interface available, passport registration required) or via Trip.com, which accepts international cards and issues confirmation in minutes. Either way, you do not need to collect a paper ticket: your passport is your ticket at the gates. Arrive 40–60 minutes early for security screening and passport checks at Beijing West, which gets busy. For help pairing the train with a plan on arrival, write to our team, and read our guide to paying with Alipay and WeChat before you board.

On board & arrival tips

Each carriage has boiling-water dispensers — bring instant noodles or tea, or buy from the food trolley; there is also a dining car with hot meals. Station announcements are in Mandarin and English, and station names appear on ceiling displays. Download maps and entertainment beforehand: mobile signal flickers in and out through the Qinling tunnels. On arrival at Chengdu East, follow signs to the metro or the official taxi rank — ignore unofficial touts. Chengdu's sights are spread out, so many travellers hand over the logistics to a local: our Chengdu private tours include station pickup.

FAQ

Train or plane from Beijing to Chengdu?

Flying takes around 3 hours door to door once transfers are counted, but the train drops you in the city centre with no airport hassle and better scenery. If you are on a 240-hour visa-free transit, the train counts as legitimate internal travel between open cities.

Do I need to print my ticket?

No. Since e-ticketing rolled out nationwide, your passport is scanned directly at the ticket gates. Keep the same document you booked with on hand.

Is there food on the train?

Yes — a dining car and trolley service with hot meals and snacks, plus boiling water. Prices are modest; bringing your own food is completely normal.

Can I buy tickets on the day?

Sometimes, but popular routes sell out, especially around Chinese holidays. Book 1–2 weeks ahead for the best choice.
