Chengdu to Leshan by Train: Times, Stations & Tickets
An hour on the rails from Chengdu puts you at the foot of the 71-metre Leshan Giant Buddha. Here is how the train leg works — plus when a private car makes more sense.

Route overview
The Chengdu–Leshan intercity line (part of the Chengdu–Mianyang–Leshan railway) runs frequent C and D trains through the Chengdu plain — typically hourly or better through the day. Journey time is around 1–1.5 hours depending on stops, with second-class fares from around ¥50–60. Combined with the short ride to the Buddha, this makes Leshan one of the easiest day trips from Chengdu, though many travellers extend to Emeishan on the same line. Schedules change several times a year — always check live times and fares on 12306 or Trip.com before booking.
Which station?
Trains leave from Chengdu South or Chengdu East (check your ticket; Chengdu South is closer to the city centre for most travellers) and arrive at Leshan Station, about 30–40 minutes' bus or taxi ride from the Giant Buddha scenic area itself — the station is not next door. Some services also stop at Leshan North, which is further out; avoid it unless convenient. Buy tickets to Leshan Station unless you are continuing to Emeishan, where the dedicated Emeishan station is closer to the mountain gate.
Ticket classes
- Second class (二等座) — 3+2 seating; for an hour's ride this is all anyone needs.
- First class (一等座) — a few extra yuan buys 2+2 seating; nice if you are travelling with big bags.
- Standing tickets — sometimes sold on busy days; avoid them for a sightseeing trip if you can.
How to book
Book on 12306 (official, English interface, passport registration) or Trip.com with an international card. E-tickets are standard — your passport is scanned at the gate. For a day trip, book the outbound a few days ahead and stay flexible on the return: trains are frequent enough that buying the return after lunch usually works, except on weekends and holidays when Leshan fills with domestic tourists. On board & arrival tips
This is a commuter-style hop: no need to plan meals, but bring water in summer. Board early enough to stow your bag — racks are small. From Leshan Station, official taxis and DiDi are the simplest way to the Buddha's east gate; boats depart from a separate dock on the river and give you the classic full-frontal view of the carving. If you would rather skip the station-to-site transfers entirely, our Chengdu private tours include Leshan and Emeishan day trips with a driver and guide — often the better option when combining both in one day.
FAQ
Can I do Leshan as a day trip from Chengdu?
Yes — trains make it barely an hour each way. Start early: the Buddha site takes 3–4 hours, and the boat adds another hour.
Train or private car to Leshan?
The train is cheap and fast, but adds transfers at both ends. With a private car you can pair Leshan with Emeishan comfortably in one day.
Which Chengdu station should I depart from?
Whichever your ticket says — most trains use Chengdu South or Chengdu East, both on the metro. Do not assume one station serves all trains.
Can I continue to Mount Emei by train?
Yes, it is the same line — Emeishan station sits near the base of the mountain, about 20–30 minutes beyond Leshan.
