Beijing to Xi'an by High-Speed Train: Schedules, Stations & Tickets
Around five hours from the capital to the ancient capital, gliding through the North China Plain and over the Yellow River. The Beijing–Xi'an bullet train is the smart way to reach the Terracotta Warriors.

Route overview
G-class trains run from Beijing to Xi'an along the Beijing–Zhengzhou–Luoyang–Xi'an high-speed corridor, one of the busiest in China. Journey time is around 4–6 hours depending on the service, with frequent departures all day — often a dozen or more daily options. Second-class fares start from around ¥500–550. Many trains continue beyond Xi'an towards Chengdu, which makes through-journeys possible. Because the corridor is dense, same-day tickets are often available, but book ahead for weekends and holidays. Schedules change several times a year — always check live times and fares on 12306 or Trip.com before booking.
Which station?
Most departures leave from Beijing West Railway Station (Metro Line 7 and 9); a growing number use Beijing Fengtai (Line 10 and 16). Confirm the station on your ticket — they serve different sides of town. In Xi'an, trains arrive at Xi'an North Railway Station, a vast hub on the northern edge served by Metro Line 2 and Line 4; from there it is around 30–40 minutes to the Bell Tower and the Muslim Quarter, where most visitors stay. A few services still use the older Xi'an Station near the city wall — check before you plan your arrival transfer.
Ticket classes
- Second class (二等座) — 3+2 seating with trays and power sockets; perfectly comfortable for five hours.
- First class (一等座) — 2+2 seating, more quiet and space; a reasonable upgrade for a half-day ride.
- Business class (商务座) — lie-flat pods; on this route they cost roughly what a flight does, so most travellers skip them.
How to book
Book via 12306 (official app/website with an English interface; passport registration required) or Trip.com, which accepts international cards and sends instant confirmation. E-tickets are universal: no paper, no collection — the passport you booked with is scanned at the gates. At Beijing West, arrive 40–50 minutes early for security; gates close about 5 minutes before departure. Flying is an alternative at around 2 hours in the air, but airport transfers often erase the savings. Our Beijing private tours and Xi'an private tours are often booked back-to-back around this train.
On board & arrival tips
Food trolley plus a dining car cover meals; boiling water is available at carriage ends. The scenery is placid farmland until the Yellow River crossing near Zhengzhou, then hills rise towards Xi'an. Signal is strong for most of the route. On arrival at Xi'an North, follow the metro signs — Line 2 runs straight towards the city centre — or use the official taxi rank. Keep your passport handy for hotel check-in, as everywhere in China. For money matters on arrival, see our Alipay and WeChat guide.
FAQ
Train or plane from Beijing to Xi'an?
The train is competitive: about 5 hours city-centre to city-centre, versus 2 hours flying plus airport transfers on both ends. Most of our travellers choose the train.
Can I continue to Chengdu on the same day?
Yes — many Beijing trains continue to Chengdu, or you can change at Xi'an North with a 30–60 minute buffer. See our Xi'an to Chengdu guide.
How do I get to the Terracotta Warriors from the station?
From downtown Xi'an, take Tourism Bus 5 (306) or the metro plus a bus, or simply book a guide with transport — it is about an hour east of the city.
Do I need to print my ticket?
No. E-tickets are standard; your passport is scanned at the gate and checked on board.
