Xi'an to Chengdu by High-Speed Train: Schedules, Stations & Tickets

Three to four hours from the Terracotta Warriors to the pandas — the Xi'an–Chengdu bullet train through the Qinling mountains is one of China's most impressive engineering rides, and the easiest way to link two of the country's favourite food cities.

Xi'an to Chengdu by High-Speed Train: Schedules, Stations & Tickets

Route overview

The Xi'an–Chengdu high-speed railway (opened 2017) dives under the Qinling range through dozens of tunnels, cutting what was once a 12-hour crawl to around 3–4.5 hours. G-class trains run frequently — roughly 20+ departures a day between early morning and evening — with second-class fares from around ¥260. Because the route is short and dense, tickets are easier to get than on the flagship Beijing–Shanghai corridor, though book ahead around Chinese public holidays. Schedules change several times a year — always check live times and fares on 12306 or Trip.com before booking.

Which station?

Most trains depart from Xi'an North Railway Station, a huge hub on the northern edge of the city served by Metro Line 2 and Line 4 (around 30–40 minutes from the Bell Tower area). A few services use Xi'an Station itself, closer to the old city — always check which station your ticket names. Arrival is at Chengdu East Railway Station, 15–20 minutes from downtown via Metro Line 2 or Line 7. Note that the station name in Chinese — 成都东 — appears on departure boards, so confirm before boarding.

Ticket classes

  • Second class (二等座) — 3+2 seating with trays and sockets; entirely fine for a 3–4 hour ride.
  • First class (一等座) — 2+2 seating, quieter and roomier; the fares on this route are close enough to second class that upgrading is painless.
  • Business class (商务座) — lie-flat seats; on a short hop it is a luxury rather than a necessity.

How to book

Use the official 12306 app or website (English interface; register with your passport) or Trip.com, which accepts international payment cards and is the simplest option for most foreign visitors. China uses e-tickets: no paper, no printing — your passport is scanned directly at the gate. At Xi'an North, allow 30–45 minutes for security and finding your gate; the station is vast. If you are combining both cities in one trip, our Xi'an private tours and Chengdu private tours are designed to hand off cleanly at the station.

On board & arrival tips

The Qinling tunnel section means long stretches with no signal — download podcasts or music first. There is a food trolley and a dining car, plus boiling water dispensers; many locals bring instant noodles. Luggage racks fill quickly on this popular route, so board promptly when the gate opens (usually 15 minutes before departure). On arrival in Chengdu, the metro is the fastest way downtown; taxis queue outside the east exit. Once you are settled, head straight for a teahouse — you have arrived in China's most relaxed big city. Our local guides meet many travellers off this exact train.

FAQ

Is the Xi'an–Chengdu train scenic?

Surprisingly, yes — the line climbs through mountain valleys and crosses towering viaducts between tunnels. Views are best before the long tunnel chains begin.

How early should I book?

1–2 weeks ahead is comfortable; tickets open about 15 days before departure. Around Golden Week (early October) and Chinese New Year, book the moment sales open.

Can I take luggage on board?

Yes. Suitcases go on overhead racks or at carriage ends. High-speed rail has no checked baggage, so keep valuables with you.

Does the train run to Chengdu South station?

A few services stop at Chengdu South, which is also central, but most terminate at Chengdu East. Check your ticket carefully.
