Hong Kong to Chengdu by High-Speed Train: Direct Services, Stations & Tickets

Yes, you can ride the rails from Hong Kong's harbour all the way to the pandas — direct high-speed trains exist, and there are also smart connecting options. Here is the current picture, plus what to double-check before you book.

Hong Kong to Chengdu by High-Speed Train: Direct Services, Stations & Tickets

Route overview

Direct G-class high-speed trains run from Hong Kong West Kowloon to Chengdu East, taking around 9–10 hours via Guangzhou and Guiyang. Departures are limited — typically only one or two direct services a day, and timetables have been adjusted several times since the service launched — so always verify current schedules and fares on 12306 or Trip.com before planning. If no direct train suits your date, the reliable fallback is a frequent Hong Kong–Guangzhou South leg (around 1 hour) followed by a Guangzhou–Chengdu service; see our Guangzhou to Chengdu guide. Second-class fares for the through journey start from roughly ¥700–800 equivalent.

Which station?

Everything happens at Hong Kong West Kowloon Station in the heart of Kowloon — a co-location terminal where you clear Hong Kong departure immigration and mainland entry immigration under one roof, which is far quicker than it sounds. Allow 60 minutes total. In Chengdu, trains arrive at Chengdu East Railway Station, 15–20 minutes from downtown on Metro Line 2 or Line 7. If you connect in Guangzhou South instead, that station is also directly on the metro and high-speed networks.

Ticket classes

  • Second class (二等座) — 3+2 seating with sockets; serviceable, but this is a long day on a fixed seat.
  • First class (一等座) — 2+2 seating; our recommendation for a journey of this length.
  • Business class (商务座) — lie-flat pods; expensive but genuinely useful if you plan to sleep through the mountain section.

How to book

Direct cross-border tickets can be bought on 12306 (passport registration required) or Trip.com, which accepts international cards — the latter is the smoothest option for most foreign visitors. Book early: direct trains are infrequent and sell out. E-tickets apply — your passport is scanned at the gates, and it is the document you will present at both immigration counters. Important: travellers entering the mainland by train still need the appropriate visa or qualifying transit status; if you are relying on the 240-hour visa-free transit scheme, confirm your nationality and routing qualify before booking a rail arrival.

On board & arrival tips

Bring snacks, a power bank and downloaded entertainment — the run through Guangxi and Guizhou has long tunnel stretches with no signal. There is a dining car and trolley service, plus boiling water. Immigration formalities all happen at West Kowloon before departure, so the ride itself is uninterrupted. On arrival at Chengdu East, use the metro or official taxi rank and ignore touts. Hong Kong dollars are useless inland — set up mobile payments first with our Alipay and WeChat guide. For a plan on the ground, our Chengdu private tours include station pickup by our guides.

FAQ

Is there really a direct train from Hong Kong to Chengdu?

Yes — direct G services from West Kowloon to Chengdu East have operated since services resumed, taking around 9–10 hours. But frequencies are low and schedules change: verify on 12306 or Trip.com for your exact date.

Do I go through immigration on the train?

No. Both Hong Kong exit and mainland entry immigration are handled at West Kowloon Station before you board. On arrival you simply walk out.

Should I fly instead?

Flights take around 2.5 hours and usually cost less than business-class rail. The train suits travellers who want the journey itself or are continuing overland.

Can I break the journey in Guilin or Yangshuo?

Not directly on this routing, but with a change of trains at Guilin or Guiyang it becomes an excellent multi-stop trip — ask us for timings.
