Guangzhou to Chengdu by High-Speed Train: Schedules, Stations & Tickets
From the Pearl River delta to the Sichuan basin in a single day: the Guangzhou–Chengdu bullet train crosses some of China's most dramatic karst country. Here is what to expect and how to book.

Route overview
Since the Chengdu–Guiyang high-speed railway opened, Guangzhou–Chengdu trains run via Guiyang on full high-speed track for most of the way. Journey time is around 7–9.5 hours depending on the service, with several departures a day, mostly from morning to early afternoon. Second-class fares start from around ¥550–700. Some services route via Chongqing instead; both routings end at the same Chengdu stations. If you are short on time, flights take about 2.5 hours — but the train earns its keep through the scenery between Guiyang and Chengdu. Schedules change several times a year — always check live times and fares on 12306 or Trip.com before booking.
Which station?
Almost all departures leave from Guangzhou South Railway Station, Asia-scale and busy, but efficient: Metro Lines 2, 7 and 22 connect it to the city centre in around 25–30 minutes. In Chengdu, trains arrive at Chengdu East Railway Station (Metro Lines 2 and 7, 15–20 minutes to downtown) or occasionally Chengdu South. A few services involve an easy cross-platform or same-station change at Guiyang — check whether your ticket is direct or requires a transfer, and allow at least 30 minutes between trains if so.
Ticket classes
- Second class (二等座) — 3+2 seating with sockets and trays; serviceable for the full ride, but eight-plus hours is a lot.
- First class (一等座) — 2+2 seating with real legroom; our standard recommendation for this route's length.
- Business class (商务座) — lie-flat pods, close to flight prices on this corridor; worth it if you plan to work or sleep.
How to book
Book via 12306 (official app/site, English interface, passport registration) or Trip.com, which takes international cards and confirms quickly. E-tickets mean no paper: your passport is scanned at the gates. Arrive at Guangzhou South 45–60 minutes early — security queues stretch at peak times, and gates close about 5 minutes before departure. If your trip runs on the 240-hour visa-free transit scheme, note your entry and exit cities and keep train bookings handy for checks.
On board & arrival tips
Bring snacks and a power bank: trolley service and a dining car exist, but options thin out on the Guiyang–Chengdu leg, and signal drops repeatedly through the mountain tunnels — some of the longest in China. The karst peaks between Guiyang and Bijie are the highlight; grab a window seat on the left side heading north-west. On arrival at Chengdu East, the metro is fastest downtown; official taxi queues are outside the main hall. Skip touts entirely. Our Chengdu private tours include station pickup, and our guide team can advise on the whole south-to-west route.

Flights win on pure time (about 3 hours door to door). The train wins on scenery, downtown-to-downtown convenience and if you prefer to avoid short-haul flights.

Yes — dining car and trolley with hot meals, plus boiling water. Many travellers bring instant noodles and tea.
How far ahead should I book?
1–2 weeks is comfortable; longer around early-October Golden Week and Chinese New Year.
