Shanghai to Chengdu by Train: Times, Stations & Ticket Tips

Shanghai and Chengdu sit at opposite ends of China's economic map, and the rail link between them is long but genuinely scenic. Here is how to decide between the day train, the night train, and a flight.

Shanghai to Chengdu by Train: Times, Stations & Ticket Tips

Route overview

This is the longest city-to-city rail route most visitors attempt. Trains follow the Yangtze corridor — the Shanghai–Wuhan–Yichang–Chongqing–Chengdu line — so most services are D-class bullet trains capped at a lower top speed than true 350 km/h routes. Journey time is around 12–15 hours depending on the service, with a few departures a day; prices start from around ¥700 in second class. There are also overnight sleeper options in conventional carriages. Because the journey eats most of a day, many travellers split it — stopping in Chongqing or Wuhan en route is easy and worthwhile. Schedules change several times a year — always check live times and fares on 12306 or Trip.com before booking.

Which station?

Departures leave from Shanghai Hongqiao or Shanghai Station — check your ticket, as they are on opposite sides of the centre. Hongqiao connects directly to Metro Lines 2 and 10 and to the Hongqiao airport hub. Arrival is at Chengdu East Railway Station, 15–20 minutes from downtown on Metro Line 2 or Line 7. If you continue to Chongqing instead, note that segment takes only around 1–2 hours on the Chengdu–Chongqing high-speed line — see our Chongqing to Chengdu guide.

Ticket classes

  • Second class (二等座) — 3+2 layout, adequate for a few hours, but on a 13-hour ride most travellers upgrade.
  • First class (一等座) — 2+2 seating, noticeably more legroom; our default recommendation on this route.
  • Sleeper options — overnight trains offer soft-sleeper berths (four-berth compartments) which effectively double as a hotel night.

How to book

Book through the official 12306 app or website (English interface, passport registration) or Trip.com, which accepts foreign cards and confirms in minutes. E-tickets are standard: your passport is your ticket at the gates, no printing needed. Hongqiao is efficient but big — arrive 45 minutes early for security and boarding gates, which close about 5 minutes before departure. If your China stay is on the 240-hour visa-free transit scheme, a domestic train ticket is fine as long as you exit to a third country.

On board & arrival tips

There is a dining car and a trolley with hot meals, plus boiling water at each carriage end — the standard move is instant noodles plus your own tea. The Yangtze gorges and river plains make this one of the more photogenic long routes; sit on the left side heading west for the best views in stretches. Download entertainment: signal drops between cities. On arrival at Chengdu East, follow signs to the metro or official taxi rank and skip the touts. Our Chengdu private tours include station pickup and a pace that respects your jet lag.

FAQ

Train or plane from Shanghai to Chengdu?

Flights take around 3.5 hours and often cost less than a first-class train seat. Choose the train for scenery, sleeper value, or if you dislike short-haul flying; otherwise fly.

Is there a faster high-speed option?

Some services route via the northern corridor through Xi'an, trimming the ride to around 11–12 hours, but availability varies. Check both routings on 12306 or Trip.com.

Can I break the journey?

Yes — buy separate tickets. Chongqing and Wuhan both make excellent one-night stops, and each has direct high-speed service into Chengdu.

Do I need my passport for boarding?

Yes, always. The passport you booked with is scanned at the gates and checked on board.
