China in 10 Days: The Ideal First-Timer Itinerary

Ten days is the sweet spot for a first visit to China — long enough for three cities without living on trains, short enough to stay affordable. Here's the Beijing–Xi'an–Chengdu route we build most often, with the high-speed rail logic that makes it flow.

China in 10 Days: The Ideal First-Timer Itinerary

Why this route works

Beijing, Xi'an and Chengdu sit on a natural southwest axis connected by high-speed rail, so you never backtrack. Each city answers a different question: Beijing is imperial China, Xi'an is ancient China, and Chengdu is slow, food-and-pandas China. Together they give you history, culture and relaxation in one trip — and Chengdu's relaxed pace at the end is not an accident. It's where a holiday finally feels like one.

Arrive into Beijing and depart from Chengdu (open-jaw tickets avoid an unnecessary return flight), or reverse the direction if your fares work better westbound.

Days 1–4: Beijing

Land, rest, then start with the greatest hits: the Great Wall at Mutianyu (quieter than Badaling, cable car up, toboggan down), the Forbidden City with Tiananmen Square, and the Temple of Heaven in the morning when locals do tai chi. Save an evening for the hutongs — rickshaw lanes, courtyard homes, and Beijing duck dinner.

  • Day 1: arrival, gentle hutong walk, early night.
  • Day 2: Forbidden City + Jingshan Park sunset view.
  • Day 3: Great Wall at Mutianyu, half day out, evening duck.
  • Day 4: Temple of Heaven, Summer Palace or 798 art district.

Detail on pace and bookings: our Beijing tours cover the wall-and-city combination. If your trip is shorter than planned, the 240-hour visa-free transit rule may let you enter without a visa — check current eligibility.

Days 5–6: Xi'an by high-speed rail

The Beijing–Xi'an high-speed train takes around 4.5 hours through the plains of Hebei and the mountains of Shaanxi — book as described in our train guide. Xi'an is the former imperial capital of the Tang dynasty and home of the Terracotta Army, 40 minutes east of the city.

  • Day 5: afternoon arrival, Muslim Quarter street food, city wall at dusk.
  • Day 6: Terracotta Army in the morning (go early), Huaqing Palace or the Small Wild Goose Pagoda after.

Two nights here is enough for the essentials; three if you want the Mount Huashan detour. See our Xi'an tours for the guide-led version.

Days 7–10: Chengdu

The Xi'an–Chengdu high-speed train runs around 3–4 hours through tunnel country into the Sichuan basin. Now the pace drops: pandas at opening time, teahouses, hotpot, and day trips.

  • Day 7: arrive, evening food street stroll — dinner per our Chengdu food guide.
  • Day 8: Panda Base at opening, Kuanzhai Alleys and Sichuan opera after.
  • Day 9: day trip — Leshan Buddha (guide here) or Dujiangyan + Mount Qingcheng.
  • Day 10: People's Park teahouse morning, departure flight from Chengdu.

Chengdu also has direct international flights to many hubs — a tidy one-way exit. For the city in depth, our three-day Chengdu itinerary slots exactly into days 7–10.

Budget and bookings

Comfortable mid-range for this route runs around ¥1,500–2,500 (about $210–350) per person per day including hotels, trains, food and guides — check latest prices, as seasons shift everything. Three bookings matter most: the Great Wall, the Terracotta Army, and panda-base tickets on holidays. Trains release tickets about two weeks out. For a full cost breakdown see how much a China trip costs, for connectivity our SIM/eSIM guide, and for payments the Alipay and WeChat Pay guide. Our private guides in each city remove the booking burden entirely.

FAQ

Is 10 days enough for China?

Yes, for three cities at a humane pace. More time adds Shanghai, Guilin or Tibet; less time should cut a city, not the pacing.

Train or fly between cities?

Trains on this axis (4.5h and 3.5h) are faster city-centre-to-city-centre than flying once you count airports. Both are fine; trains are simpler.

Do I need a visa?

Many nationalities can use the 240-hour visa-free transit or other entry options — rules change, so verify current requirements before booking.

Best time of year for this route?

April–May and September–October offer the best weather across all three cities; avoid the early-October national holiday week for crowds.

Can the route run in reverse?

Yes — Chengdu first, Beijing last works identically; choose based on flight prices into and out of each city.
