How Much Does a Trip to China Really Cost?

China has a reputation for being cheap — and for being confusing to budget. Both are half-true. Here is a realistic breakdown based on the trips we plan every week, in three comfort levels.

How Much Does a Trip to China Really Cost?

The three-line summary (per person, per day)

Prices are indicative for 2026 and assume double occupancy; they swing with season (early October and summer peaks) and city tier. Shanghai and Beijing run 15–25% above Chengdu or Xi'an.

Where the money actually goes

  • International flights — usually the biggest line item, and outside a local operator's control. Flying into Chengdu or via a Gulf hub is often cheaper than direct-to-Beijing.
  • Hotels — the second biggest. A good 4★ in Chengdu is US$60–110/night; comparable quality in Shanghai starts closer to US$90–140.
  • Guides and drivers — see our private guide cost guide: roughly US$80–150/day for a licensed guide, more with a vehicle and driver.
  • Attractions — moderate. Highlights like the Great Wall (Mutianyu), Forbidden City, and Chengdu panda base are typically US$8–15 each; a panda-base volunteer program costs more.
  • Food — the pleasant surprise. Excellent Sichuan meals run US$5–15 per person; a hotpot feast rarely exceeds US$25.

A worked example: 8 days, Chengdu + Xi'an + Beijing

For a couple travelling in May at "comfort private" level — 4★ hotels, private guide on six days, high-speed rail between cities, all entrance tickets, airport transfers — total ground cost typically lands around US$2,400–3,200 per person, excluding international flights. The same route self-guided at backpacker level can be done near US$900–1,200, with more time spent on logistics.

What's worth paying for — and what isn't

  • Worth it: a guide for your first two days in each city (context transforms the sites), private transport for day trips like Leshan, and a morning start at the panda base.
  • Skippable: five-star hotels in Xi'an (the old city's boutique 4★s are better located), airport meet-and-greet extras, and organised "dinner shows" your restaurant-obsessed guide can beat for a third of the price.

FAQ

Is China still a budget destination?

It is cheaper than Japan, South Korea or Singapore at similar comfort levels, and clearly cheaper than Western Europe. Currency swings make exact comparisons move year to year.

Do I need cash?

Mobile payments dominate, but foreign cards now link to Alipay/WeChat Pay. Carry a small amount of cash for markets and rural stops.

How far ahead should I book?

For May, early-October and summer peaks, 4–8 weeks ahead secures trains, guides and good hotels. Off-season, two weeks is often enough.
