The well-preserved Ming and Qing Ancient Town, where the draft banks and escort agencies hold the commercial secrets of the Shanxi merchants who dominated the country.

Pingyao, in central Shanxi Province, is one of China's best-preserved ancient walled cities and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Founded in the Western Zhou period and largely rebuilt in the Ming and Qing dynasties, it flourished in the 19th century as the birthplace of China's first draft bank, Rishengchang. For a century, Pingyao was the financial heart of the empire, and its merchants pioneered a nationwide remittance network that earned the city the nickname 'China's Wall Street.'
The old town is enclosed by a 6.4-kilometer Ming-era brick wall with six gates and 72 watchtowers, laid out in a turtle-shaped plan. Inside, four main streets and eight lanes form a grid of courtyard houses, temples, pawnshops, and bank headquarters. The modern county seat spreads outside the walls, but the walled core remains almost entirely intact, with no high-rise buildings and few cars, making it a rare time capsule of Qing-dynasty urban life.
Travelers come to wander the flagstone streets, climb the wall at sunset, and visit the old exchange shops where silver was counted and remitted across the empire. Beyond the walls, the painted clay sculptures of Shuanglin Temple and the wooden Hall of Ten Thousand Buddhas at Zhenguo Temple are masterpieces of Chinese Buddhist art. Pingyao is also a living town: residents still live in the courtyards, sell local beef and vinegar, and perform traditional Shanxi opera in the evenings.
Pingyao covers about 1,260 km² and has a population of roughly 500,000, with around 45,000 living inside the walled ancient city. The county is divided into several towns and subdistricts, but its heart is the 2.25 km² UNESCO-listed old town, one of only two entire ancient cities in China inscribed on the World Heritage List.

Pingyao Ancient City is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most complete surviving examples of a traditional Han Chinese county town. Its turtle-shaped layout, with the south gate as the head and the north gate as the tail, is a classic example of Ming-dynasty urban planning. The 6.4 km wall, first built in 1370, still encircles the old town, and visitors can walk the full circuit for sweeping views of grey-tiled roofs.
Inside the walls, the town is a dense network of courtyard houses, temples, and commercial buildings. The Ming and Qing Street (Ming-Qing Jie) is the main north-south artery, lined with shops, inns, and museums. The East and West streets were the financial district, home to the Rishengchang Exchange Shop and other draft banks. The city also has a Confucian temple, a Taoist temple, and a City God Temple, reflecting the religious pluralism of traditional China.
Pingyao is well connected by high-speed rail. Pingyao Ancient City Station, about 10 km northeast of the old town, has direct trains from Beijing (about 3.5 hours), Xi'an (about 3 hours), and Taiyuan (about 40 minutes). The older Pingyao Railway Station is closer to the west gate and serves slower trains. From either station, taxis or local buses take you to the city gates.
Within the walled city, most areas are pedestrian-only, so walking is the best way to explore. Electric carts and rickshaws are available for those who prefer not to walk, and bicycles can be rented. The old town is compact, roughly 2.25 km², and you can cross it on foot in about 20 minutes. Outside the walls, taxis and ride-hailing apps are convenient for reaching Shuanglin Temple and Zhenguo Temple.
Pingyao's cuisine is hearty Shanxi fare, known for its use of wheat, millet, and vinegar. The most famous local specialty is Pingyao beef (平遥牛肉), a salted and braised beef that is tender and aromatic, often served cold as a starter. Another must-try is kaolaolao (栲栳栳), steamed oat noodles shaped like honeycomb, served with a dipping sauce. The town also produces excellent aged vinegar, which is used in many dishes and sold in shops along the main streets.
Shopping in Pingyao is centered on the old town's main streets, especially Ming-Qing Street and East Street. You'll find traditional handicrafts, local foods, and souvenirs. The most popular buys are Pingyao beef vacuum-packed for travel, aged Shanxi vinegar, and hand-made cloth shoes. There are also shops selling lacquerware, paper cuttings, and calligraphy supplies. Remember to bargain politely at small stalls, though fixed prices are common in larger stores.
Pingyao's nightlife is low-key and atmospheric. After dark, the old town is illuminated with red lanterns, and the main streets become pleasant for an evening stroll. Several courtyards host traditional performances, such as Shanxi opera or shadow puppet shows. For a drink, there are small bars and teahouses tucked away in the lanes, but the scene is quiet and relaxed. The city wall is sometimes lit up, offering a beautiful backdrop for photos.
Pingyao has a continental climate with four distinct seasons. Spring and autumn are the most comfortable, with mild temperatures and clear skies. Summer can be hot and rainy, while winter is cold and dry, often with snow. The best months to visit are May, June, September, and October. Avoid the first week of October (National Day holiday) and the Chinese New Year period if you prefer fewer crowds.
| Period | Temperature | Conditions |
|---|---|---|
| Mar–May | 6-22°C | Mild and pleasant, but windy and dusty in March. Flowers bloom in April and May. |
| Jun–Aug | 18-30°C | Hot and rainy, with occasional thunderstorms. Bring an umbrella and light clothing. |
| Sep–Nov | 8-24°C | Cool and clear, the best season for walking the wall and exploring the town. |
| Dec–Feb | -8-5°C | Cold and dry, with snow possible. Dress in warm layers and enjoy fewer tourists. |
