Returning from Jiuzhaigou, no other water seems worth seeing — Five-Color Pool, Nuorilang Waterfall and over 100 alpine lakes bring an autumn fairy tale to life.

Jiuzhaigou (九寨沟) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of China's most celebrated natural wonders, tucked into the Min Mountains of northern Sichuan in the southwest. Its name means 'Valley of Nine Villages,' a reference to the nine Tibetan villages that have long inhabited this high-altitude gorge. The valley is a fairytale landscape of terraced travertine lakes, rushing waterfalls, and snow-dusted peaks, formed over millennia by calcium carbonate deposits that give the water its impossibly vivid shades of turquoise, emerald, and sapphire.
The scenic area is organized into three main valleys—Shuzheng, Rize, and Zechawa—which fan out from the central Nuorilang junction like a 'Y'. Shuzheng Valley is the main artery, home to the famous Nuorilang Waterfall and a string of jewel-like lakes such as Sparkling Lake and Panda Lake. Rize Valley climbs toward the Primeval Forest and the iconic Five Flower Lake, while Zechawa Valley leads to the Long Lake and Five Colour Pond, the highest and deepest of the lakes.
Visitors experience Jiuzhaigou primarily by eco-friendly shuttle buses that hop between viewpoints along a 60-kilometer network of boardwalks and roads. The park limits daily visitors to protect the fragile ecosystem, so booking tickets in advance is essential. Beyond the lakes, travelers can meet Tibetan and Qiang communities, sample butter tea and yak cuisine, and witness the valley's transformation through four distinct seasons—each offering a different palette of color and mood.
Jiuzhaigou Scenic Area covers approximately 720 km² in Nanping County, Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan Province. It was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1992 and is also a UNESCO Man and Biosphere Reserve. The park receives around 2 million visitors annually (pre-pandemic peak), with daily visitor numbers capped to protect the environment.

Jiuzhaigou is not a city but a pristine nature reserve in the mountains of northern Sichuan. It is renowned for its surreal landscape of multi-colored lakes, cascading waterfalls, and snow-capped peaks, formed by unique travertine terracing. The valley is a sacred homeland of Tibetan and Qiang peoples, whose culture and traditions are integral to the area's identity.
The scenic area is divided into three main valleys: Shuzheng, Rize, and Zechawa. Each offers distinct scenery, from the iconic Nuorilang Waterfall to the mirror-like Long Lake. A network of shuttle buses and boardwalks allows visitors to explore at their own pace while minimizing environmental impact.
The most common way to reach Jiuzhaigou is by flying to Jiuzhai Huanglong Airport (JZH), about 1.5 hours from the park, with connections from Chengdu, Chongqing, and other major cities. Alternatively, long-distance buses run from Chengdu (8-10 hours) and other cities in Sichuan. A high-speed railway line is under construction and expected to improve access in the future.
Within the park, a fleet of eco-friendly shuttle buses transports visitors between major viewpoints along a 60-km route. Boardwalks connect the stops, allowing you to walk between lakes and waterfalls. The buses are included in the ticket price and run frequently, but be prepared for crowds during peak seasons.
Dining in Jiuzhaigou centers on hearty Tibetan and Qiang cuisine, reflecting the local high-altitude culture. Expect yak meat, butter tea, tsampa (roasted barley flour), and wild mushrooms. Most restaurants are located in Zhangzha Town (the gateway to the park) and inside the scenic area at designated rest stops.
Shopping in Jiuzhaigou focuses on local Tibetan and Qiang handicrafts, such as woven textiles, silver jewelry, and traditional clothing. The main shopping areas are in Zhangzha Town and near the park entrance, where you can find souvenirs, outdoor gear, and local specialties like dried mushrooms and medicinal herbs.
Nightlife in Jiuzhaigou is low-key, as the area is primarily a nature destination. Evening entertainment typically consists of cultural performances featuring Tibetan and Qiang song and dance, often held in Zhangzha Town. Many visitors prefer to rest early to prepare for the next day's exploration. Stargazing can be spectacular on clear nights.
Jiuzhaigou is beautiful year-round, but each season offers a different experience. Autumn (September to October) is the most popular, with vibrant foliage reflected in the lakes. Spring brings blooming flowers and fewer crowds. Summer is green and cool, ideal for escaping the heat, while winter transforms the valley into a snowy wonderland with frozen waterfalls.
