Huanglong, the "Yellow Dragon," is a UNESCO World Heritage valley of travertine terraces, turquoise pools and snow-capped peaks in northern Sichuan. Its 3.6-kilometre golden calcified ridge looks like a dragon's spine, and the Five-Colour Pond at the top is one of China's most photographed sights. With our private guide handling permits, altitude pacing and transport from Jiuzhaigou, you simply walk and look.

Huanglong sits in Songpan County, about 100 km south of Jiuzhaigou and 3,100–3,600 m above sea level, on the eastern edge of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. The name means "Yellow Dragon" after the 3.6 km of golden travertine shoals that run down the valley like a dragon's scales. For over 2,000 years the area was a pilgrimage route to the Ming-dynasty Huanglong Temple, and in 1992 it was inscribed by UNESCO as a World Natural Heritage Site for its unique alpine karst and biodiversity.
The scenery is created by calcium carbonate-rich springs that deposit travertine as they cool, forming more than 3,400 terraced ponds in shades from jade to cobalt. The classic route climbs from the valley floor past Yingbin Pool, Marvelous Flying Waterfall and the Golden Sand Pavilions to the Five-Colour Pond, a 6,600-square-metre mosaic of 693 pools. Because of the altitude, most visitors take the cable car up and walk down; our guides build in rest stops and oxygen so the day stays comfortable.

From Jiuzhaigou, the drive to Huanglong takes about 2 hours over the 4,000 m Chuanzhusi Pass; we arrange a private car and driver so you can stop for photos and acclimatise. Alternatively, fly into Jiuzhai Huanglong Airport (JZH), 45 minutes away, or take the high-speed rail to Huanglong Jiuzhai Station and transfer 40 minutes. Most travellers pair it with Jiuzhaigou Valley as a two-day loop, with our guide timing the cable car to avoid the midday tour groups.
Peak season (Apr 1–Nov 15): ¥170 per person; low season (Nov 16–Mar 31): ¥60. Cable car up is ¥80 one way, ¥40 down; sightseeing bus at the top ¥20. Opening hours are roughly 08:00–17:00, with last entry around 15:00.
Book online in advance via the official WeChat mini-program or Trip.com; foreign passports are accepted at the gate. WeChat Pay and Alipay both link to international Visa/Mastercard, but bring some cash as a backup for small vendors.
Late September to late October offers clear skies, golden larch and full pools after the summer rains. June to August is green and waterfall-heavy but wetter. Arrive at opening (08:00) to ride the cable car before the 10:30 tour-bus wave, and aim for the Five-Colour Pond by 11:00 when the sun is high and the colours are brightest.

Yes, with care. The cable car and boardwalks make it manageable, but the altitude affects everyone differently. We recommend a slow pace, and children under 6 or anyone with heart conditions should consult a doctor first.
It is possible but rushed. Most travellers do Jiuzhaigou on day one and Huanglong on day two, staying overnight in Chuanzhusi or Jiuzhaigou town. Our private car makes the transfer seamless.
Stop, rest and breathe deeply; our guides carry oxygen and can arrange a quick descent. Symptoms usually ease below 3,000 m. Avoid strenuous climbing and drink water steadily.
Signage is bilingual, but staff speak limited English. Booking a private guide means you get context, timing and help with tickets, plus a driver who knows the scenic stops.
