Nine thousand rooms, decoded by a guide who reads roof tiles
Full dayBeijing
From $142 per group
The Forbidden City is 720,000 square metres of 'what am I looking at?' — until someone explains that roof animals, column colours and nail counts were a legal hierarchy. By noon the palace reads like a book. The afternoon adds Jingshan's hill for the classic golden-roof panorama.
The plan
- 08:30 Tiananmen Square (security allows 20–30 min)
- 09:15 Forbidden City, south to north — three main halls then the inner court
- 12:30 Optional courtyard lunch in the hutongs
- 14:30 Jingshan Park — the panorama, and a rest your feet earned
- 16:30 Wrap up near the Drum Tower, metro back
Good to know
Passport checks apply at every ticket gate — bring originals. The palace is closed on Mondays. Walking totals about 6 km on stone; comfortable shoes are non-negotiable.
