How Many Days in Xi'an? 2, 3 or 4 Days, Planned
Two days covers the Terracotta Army, the city walls and the Muslim Quarter; three adds a proper food day and a quieter sight; four lets you day-trip to Mount Hua. Here is the split.

The short answer
Two days is the absolute minimum for the Terracotta Army and the city wall, but three days is the sweet spot — it adds a proper food day and lets you actually enjoy Xi'an rather than race through it. Four days lets you add the dramatic Mount Hua day trip. Most people plan Xi'an as a two-night stop on a wider loop; see our 10-day itinerary for context.
2 days: the essentials
- Day 1 — the Terracotta Army: go early, it is about an hour east of the city. Back in the afternoon for the Bell and Drum Towers, then the Muslim Quarter at night.
- Day 2 — the city wall and old city: rent a bike and ride the full 14-km wall loop in the morning, then the Great Mosque and a final food crawl before you leave.
3 days: add the food and the quiet
Keep the two-day core and add a day built around Shaanxi food — biangbiang noodles, roujiamo (the original 'Chinese hamburger'), yangrou paomo, and the stalls of the Muslim Quarter done properly rather than in passing. Pair it with a quieter sight like the Shaanxi History Museum or the Small Wild Goose Pagoda, which most people miss.
4 days: Mount Hua day trip
Mount Hua (Huashan) is one of China's most thrilling mountains — sheer cliff paths, cable cars and a famous plank walk. It is a full day trip from Xi'an and genuinely worth it if you have the fourth day and a head for heights. It is not for everyone; if it is not for you, spend the day slow in the old city instead.
What changes your number
- Food focus: add a day — Xi'an's food scene is one of China's best and rewards time.
- Photography: the city wall at golden hour and Mount Hua at dawn both reward extra mornings.
- Weather: summer is hot; build in a slower pace.
Bottom line
Plan three days if you can — two covers the checklist, three lets you taste the city, four adds the mountain. Xi'an is a place you feel through its food and its walls, so give it at least one unhurried day.
