Beijing vs Shanghai: Which City Should a First-Timer Visit?
Beijing is ancient China — walls, palaces, hutongs. Shanghai is modern China — skylines, concessions and cocktails. For a first-timer deciding between them, here is the honest comparison.

The honest difference
Beijing is the imperial capital — the Great Wall, the Forbidden City, the hutongs and a rhythm that feels older and more formal. Shanghai is China's commercial heart — a riverfront skyline, the former French Concession, and an energy that is fast, international and fashionably modern. Choosing between them is choosing which China you want to meet first.
History and sights
- Beijing owns the iconic landmarks: the Forbidden City, the Great Wall, the Temple of Heaven, the Summer Palace, Tiananmen Square.
- Shanghai owns atmosphere: the Bund at night, the French Concession's plane-tree lanes, Yu Garden, and the vertigo of the Lujiazui skyline.
If your trip is built around China's big, unmissable sights, Beijing wins. If it is built around vibe, food and modern city life, Shanghai is the stronger call.
Food
Beijing's food is hearty and northern — Peking duck, dumplings, zhajiang noodles. Shanghai's is refined and sweeter — xiaolongbao soup dumplings, shengjianbao, and a deep bench of international restaurants. Neither will disappoint a food-focused traveller, but the styles could not be more different.
Pace and ease of travel
Shanghai is arguably the easiest big city in China for a first-timer — great metro, English-friendly signs, plenty of international amenities. Beijing is also well connected but its sights are spread wider and require more planning (the Forbidden City and the Great Wall both need advance thought).
How to choose
- Pick Beijing if this may be your only China trip and you want the iconic sights.
- Pick Shanghai if you want a softer landing, modern comfort and day-trip access to Suzhou and Hangzhou.
- Do both if you have a week or more — the high-speed train connects them in about 4.5 hours. See how they fit in our 10-day itinerary.
Bottom line
Beijing is the postcard, Shanghai is the mood. For a first trip that must include the Great Wall, start in Beijing; for a first trip built around comfort and city energy, start in Shanghai. If you can, see both.
