The starting point of the Maritime Silk Road — the legends of the greatest port of the Song and Yuan dynasties are hidden in Kaiyuan Temple, Peaceful Temple, and the red-brick ancient houses.

Quanzhou, known historically as Zayton, is a coastal city in Fujian Province, East China, and one of China's most storied maritime hubs. For centuries it was the starting point of the Maritime Silk Road, a cosmopolitan port where Arab, Persian, Indian, and European traders mingled with Chinese merchants. Marco Polo reportedly called it one of the greatest ports in the world. This rich legacy earned Quanzhou a UNESCO World Heritage listing in 2021 as 'Quanzhou: Emporium of the World in Song-Yuan China', recognizing its unique blend of religious, cultural, and architectural heritage.
The city proper is divided into several districts. Licheng District is the historic core, home to the 1,300-year-old Kaiyuan Temple with its twin stone pagodas, the Qingjing Mosque (one of China's oldest), and the lively Zhongshan Road. Fengze District to the east is the modern commercial and administrative center, with shopping malls and high-rises. Luojiang District lies to the north, while Quangang District is a coastal industrial area. The county-level cities of Jinjiang and Shishi are famous for their vibrant private economy and overseas Chinese connections. Nan'an, Hui'an, Anxi, Yongchun, and Dehua counties offer a mix of mountainous landscapes and traditional crafts.
Travelers to Quanzhou experience a living museum of cultural exchange. They can wander through ancient temples, mosques, and Confucian academies, often within walking distance of each other. The city's maritime heritage is palpable at the Luoyang Bridge, an 11th-century stone causeway, and the Quanzhou Maritime Museum. Foodies delight in local specialties like oyster omelets and rice noodle soup, while shoppers seek out Dehua porcelain and Anxi Tieguanyin tea. Quanzhou's warm climate, friendly locals, and deep history make it a rewarding destination off the beaten path.
Quanzhou covers an area of approximately 11,015 square kilometers and has a population of about 8.8 million. It administers 4 urban districts (Licheng, Fengze, Luojiang, Quangang), 3 county-level cities (Jinjiang, Shishi, Nan'an), and 4 counties (Hui'an, Anxi, Yongchun, Dehua). In 2021, 22 sites in Quanzhou were inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage under the name 'Quanzhou: Emporium of the World in Song-Yuan China', highlighting its role as a global maritime trade hub.

Quanzhou is a prefecture-level city in Fujian Province, located on the Taiwan Strait. It is one of China's historical and cultural cities, renowned for its role as a maritime trade hub during the Song and Yuan dynasties. The city's name means 'spring prefecture', and it is often called 'Zayton' in historical texts, after the abundance of Chinese parasol trees (tong) that once grew there.
The city's landscape is diverse, from the coastal plains in the east to the mountainous regions in the west and north. The urban core is split by the Jin River, with Licheng District on the south bank and Fengze District on the north. Quanzhou's architecture reflects its multicultural past, with Buddhist temples, Taoist shrines, Islamic mosques, and Christian churches coexisting side by side.
Quanzhou is served by Quanzhou Jinjiang International Airport (JJN), located about 12 kilometers south of the city center. The airport has flights to major Chinese cities and some international destinations. High-speed trains connect Quanzhou to Xiamen (30 minutes), Fuzhou (1 hour), and Shanghai (5 hours) via the Fuzhou-Xiamen High-Speed Railway. The main railway station is Quanzhou Station, with another station in Jinjiang.
Within the city, public buses are frequent and affordable, though signage is mostly in Chinese. Taxis and ride-hailing apps like Didi are convenient. For exploring the historic districts, walking and cycling are ideal. The city is also building a metro system, but currently, buses and taxis are the main options. Ferries connect Quanzhou to Kinmen and other nearby islands.
Quanzhou cuisine is a branch of Minnan (Southern Fujian) cuisine, known for its fresh seafood, subtle flavors, and use of local ingredients. The city's food scene is a highlight for many visitors, with street stalls and family-run restaurants offering authentic tastes. Must-try dishes include oyster omelet (o-a-jian), rice noodle soup (mian-xian-hu), and braised pork rice (lu-rou-fan).
Quanzhou offers a mix of traditional crafts and modern shopping. The city is famous for Dehua porcelain, Anxi Tieguanyin tea, and Hui'an stone carvings. Visitors can shop for these specialties at local markets and specialty stores. Modern malls and shopping streets are concentrated in Fengze District, while the historic Licheng District has charming boutiques and souvenir shops.
Quanzhou's nightlife is relatively relaxed compared to larger cities. The historic areas come alive in the evening with illuminated temples and bustling night markets. Visitors can enjoy local snacks, tea houses, and cultural performances. For bars and clubs, head to Fengze District, where modern entertainment venues cater to a younger crowd.
Quanzhou has a subtropical monsoon climate with mild winters and hot, humid summers. The best time to visit is in spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November), when temperatures are pleasant and rainfall is moderate. Summer can be very hot and typhoon-prone, while winter is mild but can be chilly at night.
| Period | Temperature | Conditions |
