Xiling Snow Mountain — the peak Du Fu wrote about a thousand years ago, "the snow window framed by the western mountains" — is Sichuan's ski resort and summer alpine escape, under two hours from Chengdu. Snow scenery in winter, wildflower meadows and a 100-metre glass skywalk in summer.

Xiling Snow Mountain (Xiling Xueshan) is the highest peak of the Sichuan basin's western rim at 5,364 m, visible from Chengdu on clear days. The developed scenic area sits mid-mountain around 2,200–3,200 m and runs two personalities: from December to around March it is China's southernmost serious ski resort, with beginner slopes and a purpose-built resort village; from spring to autumn it turns into a grassy alpine park of flower meadows, layers of cloud below, and one of the longest ropeways in Asia.
Most visitors come for a day trip or a ski weekend; the summit itself is a mountaineering route rather than a sightseeing target.

The mountain lies in Dayi county, about 95–100 km west of Chengdu. By car it takes roughly 1.5–2 hours via the expressway. Public transport is possible — buses toward Dayi or Huashuiwan, then a local transfer — but slower, which is why most visitors use a private car or driver. It pairs with a Huashuiwan hot-spring night or, for ambitious travellers, with a route onward toward the Dujiangyan/Mount Qingcheng corridor.
Winter pricing combines an entry ticket with ski passes and equipment rental — expect a total in the low hundreds of yuan per person for a day of skiing, with entry alone cheaper in the green season; ropeways are charged separately in both seasons. The resort opens roughly 8 am–6 pm in summer and longer into evening light in ski season; hours vary — your guide confirms on the day. Weekend ski days sell out of rental gear, so book ahead.
Mid-December to late February for reliable snow and skiing; July–August for cool-air hiking when the meadows bloom — the mountain is Chengdu's air-conditioner. Weekends in both seasons are crowded; midweek visits feel like a different place. Note the altitude: at 2,200–3,200 m most people feel nothing, but walk gently the first hour. Yes — Xiling is the region's flagship resort, well suited to beginners, with the season typically running December to around February or early March.
Yes, with an early start: under two hours each way leaves a solid 5–6 hours on the mountain.
In winter, consistently at the resort level; the famous "snow mountain" peak keeps snow year-round but is not part of the sightseeing area.
