How to Apply for a China Tourist Visa (L Visa): Step-by-Step
A practical walkthrough of the L-visa process: where to apply, what the consulate wants to see, realistic timelines, and how to fill the 2026 online form without rejection.

Step 1 — Check whether you need an L visa at all
If you hold a passport from one of the 54 visa-free-transit countries and your trip fits inside 240 hours, you may not need a visa (see our transit guide). Some nationalities — including France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Malaysia and Australia — also enjoy temporary visa-free entry for short stays. Always confirm on the website of the Chinese embassy in your country before booking.
Step 2 — Prepare the file
- Passport with 6+ months validity and two blank pages.
- The COVA online application form (printed and signed) — biometrics are collected on your first visit.
- One 33×48 mm photo, white background, taken within 6 months.
- Round-trip flight bookings and hotel reservations covering every night.
- A simple day-by-day itinerary; consulates rarely interview tourists but the itinerary must match your bookings.
Step 3 — Submit and track
Apply through your local Chinese Visa Application Service Centre. Standard processing is 4–7 working days; express service costs roughly double and returns in 2–3. Fees vary by nationality (about USD 30–140). Apply 4–6 weeks before departure — never inside 2 weeks.
Common rejection causes
- Itinerary gaps: a hotel missing for one night.
- Passport photo older than 6 months or with a smile.
- COVA form mismatching your flight dates.
Once approved, the visa typically grants 30 days per entry with 90–180 days to enter. Multi-entry 10-year visas are again available for US citizens. MyGuideTrip's concierge can review your itinerary before you submit.
