Chengdu in 48 Hours: A Stopover That's Worth It

Landing in Chengdu on China's visa-free transit with two days to spare? Good news: Chengdu's highlights are compact and the airport links are fast. This is the tightest itinerary we'd still call enjoyable — not a checklist you sprint through.

Chengdu in 48 Hours: A Stopover That's Worth It

Before you leave the airport

Confirm you qualify for 240-hour visa-free transit: eligible passport, onward ticket to a third country or region, and accommodation booked for your first night. Chengdu Tianfu (TFU) and Shuangliu (CTU) both process transit entry. Grab an eSIM or arrange roaming before departure — maps and translation apps are essential.

Day 1 — Pandas, then old Chengdu

Morning: go straight to the panda base for opening time (7:30–8:00 am). From downtown it is 30–50 minutes by car; from Tianfu airport, roughly an hour. Two hours inside is enough — go to the farthest enclosures first while the pandas are awake.

Afternoon: check in, lunch near Taikoo Li (start with dan dan noodles), then walk Kuanzhai Alleys. If jet lag bites, a People's Park teahouse armchair and a pot of jasmine tea is the best cure ever invented.

Evening: hotpot (ask for yuanyang — a split mild/spicy broth) or a Sichuan opera face-changing show if you have the energy.

Day 2 — One big half-day, then food

Pick one:

  • Leshan Giant Buddha (full half-day) — a 71-metre cliff-carved Buddha, 2 hours each way. The boat view is the efficient option.
  • City deep-dive (relaxed) — Jinsha Site Museum in the morning, Jinli Street and Wuhou Shrine after lunch, sunset on the Anshun bridge.

Evening: skewers on Jianshe Road, pack, and sleep before your onward flight.

What we'd skip on a 48-hour clock

  • Dujiangyan or Mount Qingcheng — magnificent, but they deserve a full day each.
  • Shopping streets beyond one pass through Taikoo Li.
  • Any restaurant with a photo menu aimed purely at tourists.

Logistics that make or break it

  • A private guide-driver for the two days converts a stopover from stressful to smooth — panda-base timing, ticket queues and the Leshan drive all disappear as problems. See what that costs.
  • Book the panda base 3–7 days ahead; entry slots sell out.
  • Keep your onward boarding pass handy — hotels will ask for it at check-in.

FAQ

Tianfu or Shuangliu — which airport is better for a stopover?

Shuangliu is closer to downtown (≈20–30 min); Tianfu is newer and farther (≈50–70 min) but has more international arrivals. Both work fine with pre-arranged transport.

Is 48 hours enough to see pandas?

Yes — with a 7:30 am start you'll have the pandas to yourself for the best two hours of the day.

Do I need a visa if I stay two days?

Not if you qualify for 240-hour transit. If your onward ticket is back to your origin country, check the exceptions or apply for an L visa before flying.
