What it is

Yading Nature Reserve is a 4A-rated scenic area in the Garzê Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Sichuan Province. It is revered as the earthly paradise of the Three Bodhisattvas: Chenresig (Avalokiteshvara), Jampelyang (Manjushri), and Chanadorje (Vajrapani). For centuries, Tibetan pilgrims have circled these peaks in kora, seeking spiritual merit. The reserve gained international fame after photographer Joseph Rock's 1928 National Geographic article, which inspired James Hilton's novel 'Lost Horizon' and the mythical Shangri-La. Its remote location and pristine ecosystems have earned it the nickname 'The Last Pure Land on the Blue Planet'.

The landscape is a dramatic mix of high-altitude wetlands, ancient forests, and turquoise glacial lakes. The iconic Pearl Lake (Zhuoma Lake) reflects the majestic Chenresig Peak, while Milk Lake (Niunai Hai) and Five Color Lake (Wuse Hai) sit at over 4,500 meters. The reserve is also a biodiversity hotspot, home to snow leopards, blue sheep, and rare pheasants. Visitors can experience Tibetan culture in nearby villages and witness the deep spiritual connection locals have with the land. Our guides provide insights into the ecology and spirituality, enriching every step of the journey.

May to June offers blooming rhododendrons and fewer crowds. Avoid July-August (rainy season) and winter (heavy snow, some trails closed). For photography, early morning provides the best light on the peaks and calm reflections in the lakes. Arrive at the reserve entrance by 7:00 to maximize your day.

Tips from our guides

  • Acclimatize properly: spend at least one night in Daocheng (3,750m) before visiting Yading. Our guides carry portable oxygen and monitor your health.
  • Pack layers: temperatures can drop below freezing at higher elevations even in summer. Bring a windproof jacket, hat, gloves, sunscreen, and sunglasses.
  • Take the electric cart to Luorong Pasture to save energy for the high lakes hike. Horse rides are available but limited and must be booked early.
  • Respect local customs: walk clockwise around monasteries and mani stones. Don't touch sacred objects without permission. Ask before photographing locals.
  • Bring cash for small purchases; ATMs are scarce. Mobile signal is weak in the reserve, so download offline maps and inform someone of your plans.
