People's Park is the most Chengdu thing in Chengdu: bamboo chairs, jasmine tea, ear-cleaners with tuning forks, and retirees dancing under the trees. Entry is free, the teahouse costs pennies, and no other city sight shows you daily local life this clearly.

People's Park (Renmin Gongyuan), opened in 1911, is the city's oldest public park — a 11-hectare green block in the heart of downtown where locals do everything: tea, mahjong, tai chi, ballroom dancing, calligraphy with water brushes, and the famous marriage market under the plane trees. It is not a monument; it is a stage where the city performs itself, seven days a week.
The centrepiece is Heming Teahouse, a century-old institution of open-air bamboo chairs where a cup of refilled jasmine tea can cost you less than a metro ride. Combine it with Kuanzhai Alleys one metro stop west for the perfect half-day of old Chengdu.

The park sits on Tianfu Square's west side, minutes from the city centre. Metro Line 2 to People's Park station exits directly at the gate. From Chunxi Road or Taikoo Li it is two stops; from central hotels a 10-minute taxi or a pleasant walk through the old quarter.
Entry to the park is free; teahouse tea runs roughly ¥10–30 a cup with hot-water refills, and ear-cleaning services have fixed posted prices — agree before sitting down. The park is open daily from early morning to around 10 pm; teahouse and stall hours vary — your guide confirms on the day. Weekends are the liveliest and busiest; there is no ticketing or reservation of any kind.
Late morning to mid-afternoon is when the park is at full throttle — tea, dancing, market, all running. Spring and autumn are made for sitting outside; summer mornings stay shaded and cool; winter sunny days fill the teahouse with retirees and visitors alike. For the citywide view, our season guide has the details.

Fairly famous but functionally local — visitors join a scene that runs for Chengdu people first. That is its charm.
A cup with refills typically costs about the price of a coffee elsewhere in the city — expect roughly ¥10–30. Prices vary by seat and season.
Yes — the dance groups welcome anyone who follows along. Bring goodwill rather than skills.
