Nalati Grassland is the 'grassland in the sky' of the Ili Valley, a vast high-altitude pasture where Kazakh herders still move with the seasons. Its rolling green ridges, snow-capped backdrop, and wildflower meadows make it one of Xinjiang's most photogenic landscapes. With our private guide, you skip the logistics and ride straight to the quietest viewpoints.

Nalati Grassland sits at 1,800–2,200 metres on the northern slope of the Tianshan Mountains, about 110 km east of Xinyuan County in Ili. For centuries it has been summer pasture for Kazakh nomads, who bring their herds up each June and return to lower valleys in autumn. The name 'Nalati' comes from a Mongolian phrase meaning 'place where the sun shines', a nod to its open, sunlit bowls. In 2005 it was rated a 5A scenic area, and it remains one of the few accessible alpine meadows where traditional transhumance is still part of daily life.
The scenic zone is divided into three main valleys: Airline Grassland (空中草原), River Valley Grassland (河谷草原), and Alpine Grassland (高山草原). Each has its own character—Airline for panoramic views, River Valley for easy walks along a stream, Alpine for higher, wilder terrain. A shuttle bus network connects the entrances, but the distances are large, so many visitors hire a local driver or join a guided tour. Our guides know the bus timings and can arrange a private vehicle to reach the best spots without waiting.

Nalati is about 3.5–4 hours by car from Yining (Ili's main city) or 2 hours from Xinyuan County. Most travellers fly to Yining then hire a private driver; our guides can arrange a comfortable vehicle and handle the scenic-area shuttle tickets. It works well as a full-day trip from Yining or as an overnight stay in a local yurt camp. Public buses exist but are slow and infrequent, so a private transfer is far more efficient.
Entrance fee is ¥95 in peak season (June–Sept) and ¥75 off-peak; shuttle bus within the scenic area costs ¥40–¥100 depending on the route. Opening hours are roughly 8:00–20:00, but last entry is around 18:00. Book through official WeChat mini-programs or our guide can reserve for you.
Foreign cards are not accepted at the ticket office; bring cash or use WeChat Pay/Alipay linked to an international card. Our guide can help with mobile payments if needed.
Visit from late May to September, when the grass is green and wildflowers bloom. July and August are warmest but busiest; late June offers the best balance of flowers and fewer crowds. Avoid mornings before 10:00 when tour groups arrive; instead, go late afternoon for softer light and quieter meadows.

Not strictly, but a guide greatly simplifies transport, tickets, and language barriers. Our guides also know the quietest spots and can arrange cultural encounters with Kazakh families.
Yes, several Kazakh families offer basic yurt stays inside and near the scenic area. Conditions are simple—shared bathrooms, no Wi-Fi—but it's a memorable experience. We can book one for you.
At 1,800–2,200 metres, altitude sickness is rare. You may feel slightly breathless on uphill walks, but it passes quickly. Take it easy on your first day.
A private car or small-group tour is best, taking 3.5–4 hours. Public buses run from Yining to Xinyuan, then you need a taxi to the scenic area—time-consuming and not recommended.
