Guozigou Valley is a dramatic Tianshan gorge in Xinjiang's Ili region, where the 700-metre Guozigou Bridge soars over forested slopes. It's the classic gateway between Yining and Sayram Lake, and our private guide turns a white-knuckle mountain drive into a relaxed, photo-rich day with local insight.

Guozigou, literally 'Fruit Valley', cuts through the northern Tianshan range in Ili Kazakh Autonomous Prefecture. For centuries it was the main corridor between the Ili Valley and Dzungaria, used by Silk Road caravans, Mongol armies and Qing garrisons. The gorge's microclimate supports wild apple, apricot and seabuckthorn, giving it the name. In 2011 the Guozigou Bridge opened, a 700-metre span on the G30 expressway that became Xinjiang's first major cable-stayed bridge and instantly a scenic icon.
The valley floor sits around 1,200 metres, while surrounding peaks rise above 3,000 metres, creating a sharp contrast of alpine meadows, spruce forest and snow patches well into June. The old highway still winds through the gorge, offering pull-outs for photography, while the expressway crosses high on the bridge. Most travellers experience Guozigou en route between Yining and Sayram Lake, but the surrounding area also has Kazakh yurts and hiking trails. Our guides know exactly where to stop for the best light and safest views.

Guozigou is about 90 km north of Yining (2 hours by private car) and 60 km south of Sayram Lake. Most foreign travellers base in Yining, reachable by direct flights from Urumqi or a 5-hour high-speed train from Urumqi to Yining. From there, a private guide with a vehicle is the most practical way to visit, as public buses don't stop at the viewpoints. We usually combine Guozigou with Sayram Lake in one full day, leaving Yining at 8am and returning by early evening.
There is no entrance fee for Guozigou Valley itself; the bridge and gorge are viewed from public roads. However, if you visit a local yurt camp or private meadow, expect a small fee of ¥20–50 per person. The old highway is free to drive, but parking at pull-outs is limited. Bring cash or use WeChat Pay/Alipay, as foreign cards are rarely accepted in this rural area. Our guide handles any local payments for you.
Late May to early June is ideal, when wildflowers bloom and snow still caps the peaks. September offers golden autumn colours and clearer skies. Avoid July–August weekends, when domestic tour buses crowd the viewpoints. For photography, early morning (8–10am) gives soft light on the bridge, while late afternoon (5–7pm) lights the valley floor. Winter can be snowy and the old road may close, so check conditions with our team.

No special permit is needed for the valley or bridge, as they are along public roads. However, border areas near Khorgos may require a permit; our team will advise if your itinerary includes them.
It's possible by private car or taxi from Yining, but public transport doesn't stop at viewpoints. A guide ensures safe stops, explains the history and handles language barriers with local Kazakhs.
Most travellers spend 1.5–2 hours at the main viewpoints and bridge. If you add a yurt visit or short hike, allow 3 hours. It pairs perfectly with Sayram Lake for a full-day trip.
Yes, the old highway has designated pull-outs with clear views of the bridge and gorge. Your driver will know the safest spots. Do not stop on the expressway, as it's illegal and dangerous.
