For the legs the high-speed rail doesn't serve well: door-to-door to Tianjin (2 h), the Mutianyu wall gateway districts (1.5 h) or the imperial summer resort at Chengde (3.5 h). Private car means luggage goes where you go — including lunch stops worth taking.
