First-timers, welcome home

The nervous couple who landed at midnight taught Ryan what his job is really about.

They landed at midnight, first time in China, and they looked terrified. The wife held the husband's arm like the airport was going to swallow them. My sign said their name in English and Thai. When they saw it, they exhaled for what looked like the first time all day.

That night, on the drive to the hotel, I told them one thing: for the next week, you don't have to figure anything out. That's my job. By the time we reached the hotel, they were already asking about breakfast.

For first-timers, the small stuff is the whole trip. How to pay. How to order. What the signs mean. I don't just guide them through Chengdu — I walk them through China's little daily mysteries, one at a time, until they stop being scared and start being curious.

The last day, the husband said something I still think about: "You didn't just show us China. You made us feel like we could come back." That's the part of the job no itinerary lists — but it's the whole point.

They came back the next year. This time, they brought their parents.
