What it is

The garden was established in 1960 on the slopes of Wanshi Mountain, a granite ridge that rises sharply behind Xiamen University and Nanputuo Temple. Its name in Chinese, Wanshi, means 'ten thousand stones', a nod to the boulders scattered through the forest. Over six decades it has grown into one of China's leading botanical research and display centres, covering more than 4 square kilometres and holding thousands of plant species, including rare cycads, palms and orchids. Because it is a living scientific collection, sections are rotated and replanted, so there is always something new in bloom.

The garden is best known for two contrasting landscapes. The Rainforest World is a shaded valley where artificial mist drifts through giant ferns and buttressed trees, creating an otherworldly atmosphere that photographers love. Nearby, the Succulent Plant Area displays hundreds of cacti and desert plants from the Americas and Africa, arranged on rocky terraces that feel like a different continent. Elsewhere you will find a bamboo grove, a bonsai garden, a medicinal plant section and the historic Wanshi Lotus Temple, where monks still chant and incense curls through the trees.

Highlights

  • Rainforest World — A misted valley of tree ferns, lianas and giant leaves; timed mist bursts make it feel like a jungle movie set, especially in the morning light.
  • Succulent Plant Area — Hundreds of cacti, agaves and euphorbias from arid regions, set on sunny terraces; a striking contrast to the humid forest just minutes away.
  • Wanshi Lotus Temple — A working Buddhist temple tucked into the hills, with ancient stone carvings and a peaceful courtyard that few foreign visitors reach.
  • Bamboo and Bonsai Gardens — Quiet paths through swaying bamboo and a collection of meticulously shaped miniature trees, perfect for a slow stroll.
  • Xiamen Skyline Views — From upper paths and pavilions, you get sweeping views over the city, the sea and the islands beyond, a great spot for late-afternoon photos.

How to get there

The main entrance is on Wanshi Road, about 15 minutes by taxi (¥20–30) from Zhongshan Road or Xiamen University. Bus routes 87, 57 and B2 stop nearby, but taxis or ride-hailing are easiest for foreign visitors. Many travellers combine it with Nanputuo Temple and Xiamen University in one day: start at the temple, walk or take a short taxi to the garden, then descend to the university and beach. Allow 3–4 hours inside the garden, more if you hike the upper trails.

Tickets & practical info

Admission is ¥30 per person; the shuttle bus inside costs ¥10 for a single ride or ¥15 for unlimited hop-on-hop-off. Opening hours are roughly 6:30–18:00, with last entry around 17:30. Buy tickets at the gate or via the official WeChat account; foreign credit cards are not always accepted at the counter, so bring cash or use WeChat Pay/Alipay linked to an international card.

Best time to visit

Visit on a weekday morning, ideally between 8:00 and 10:00, when the rainforest mist is thickest and tour groups have not yet arrived. Spring (March–May) and autumn (October–November) offer the most comfortable temperatures and the most blooms. Avoid midday in summer, when heat and humidity peak, and note that the succulent area is brightest and best photographed in clear morning light.

Tips from our guides

  • Wear comfortable walking shoes with grip; the garden is built on a steep hillside with many stairs and uneven stone paths, and some trails are slippery after rain.
  • Bring mosquito repellent and light long sleeves, especially for the Rainforest World, where humidity and insects are part of the experience.
  • Use the internal shuttle bus to save energy: it links the main entrance, Rainforest World and the upper areas, letting you cover more ground without exhausting yourself.
  • For the best photos in the rainforest, go early and shoot towards the light beams; a fast lens helps in the dim, misty conditions, and a plastic bag protects your camera from moisture.
  • Check the mist schedule at the entrance or on the official WeChat account; the rainforest misting runs at intervals, and timing your visit to one makes the experience far more dramatic.

FAQ

How long does it take to visit the Botanical Garden?

Most visitors spend 3–4 hours, including the shuttle bus and a stop at the Rainforest World and Succulent Area. If you hike to the upper temples and viewpoints, allow 5 hours or more.

Is the garden suitable for children or elderly visitors?

Yes, but be prepared for hills and stairs. The shuttle bus reduces walking, and the lower areas around the main entrance are relatively flat. Strollers are possible but not ideal on the steeper paths.

Can I buy tickets with a foreign credit card?

The ticket office prefers cash or Chinese mobile payments. Foreign cards are rarely accepted at the gate, so link your card to WeChat Pay or Alipay in advance, or carry enough cash in yuan.

What is the best way to combine the garden with other sights?

Pair it with Nanputuo Temple and Xiamen University, all within a short taxi ride. Our guides can arrange a seamless half-day route that avoids backtracking and includes a relaxed lunch nearby.
