The Wuhou Shrine Museum is China's only temple where a ruler (Liu Bei) and his chancellor (Zhuge Liang) are worshipped together, making it the most significant surviving site of Three Kingdoms heritage. Beyond the halls of emperors and generals, highlights include the 'Three Wonders Stele', ancient cypresses, and a well-curated collection of Three Kingdoms artifacts. The most photographed spot is the red-wall bamboo alley — a narrow path flanked by crimson walls and swaying green bamboo. Exit through the back gate directly into Jinli Ancient Street, so the two combine easily into one afternoon. Tickets start at ¥50, with online reservation required in peak seasons. Open 09:00-18:00; Metro Line 3 to Gaoshengqiao Station is a ten-minute walk away. English signage and audio guides are available. Allow at least two hours if the history matters to you.

What it is

Wuhou Shrine, or the Temple of Marquis Wu, was originally built in the 4th century to commemorate Zhuge Liang, the brilliant strategist and statesman of the Shu Han kingdom. It was later merged with the adjacent Liu Bei Temple, creating a unique joint shrine. The complex was relocated to its current site in the 14th century and has been rebuilt and expanded over the centuries. Today it stands as a memorial to loyalty and wisdom, attracting history buffs and admirers of Zhuge Liang from across East Asia.

The shrine is set within a lush garden with ancient cypress trees, bamboo groves, and tranquil ponds. Key structures include the Hall of Liu Bei, the Hall of Zhuge Liang, and the Red Wall Bamboo Path, a photogenic corridor. The Three Kingdoms history here is well-documented in the adjacent museum. For a deeper dive, pair your visit with the nearby Jinli Ancient Street, a lively pedestrian area with snacks and crafts. Our guides can weave the historical narrative into a seamless half-day tour.
