Tianmen Mountain

Tianmen Mountain is the dramatic 1,518-metre peak that watches over Zhangjiajie, pierced by the 131-metre-high Tianmen Cave, the world's highest natural arch. A 7.5-kilometre cable car sweeps you from the city to the summit, where cliff-hugging walkways and glass skywalks deliver dizzying views. With our private guide handling tickets and timing, you skip the queues and experience it all without stress.

What it is

Tianmen Mountain, or 'Gate of Heaven Mountain', has been revered for centuries as a sacred portal. The colossal Tianmen Cave was formed in 263 AD when a cliff face collapsed, creating a natural arch that locals interpreted as a gateway to the heavens. Emperors sent offerings, and the mountain became a pilgrimage site. In modern times, it gained fame for spectacular feats: in 1999, three fighter jets flew through the cave, and in 2011, wingsuit flyers stunned the world. The 7.5-kilometre cable car, one of the world's longest, was completed in 2005, opening the summit to all.

The mountain is a self-contained wonder, with a network of cliff-edge walkways, temples, and the famous 999-step 'Stairway to Heaven' leading to the cave. The summit plateau offers forest trails and panoramic views over Zhangjiajie's karst peaks. The glass skywalks, including a 60-metre cliff-hanging glass path, are not for the faint-hearted. Our guides know the flow of crowds and can route you to the quietest corners, ensuring a serene experience even on busy days.

How to get there

Tianmen Mountain is in Zhangjiajie city, Hunan. Most travellers arrive by high-speed train from Changsha (2.5 hours) or fly into Zhangjiajie Hehua Airport. The cable car base station is a 10-minute taxi ride from the city centre or a short walk from the train station. We arrange private transfers and timed tickets, so you avoid the long queues. It pairs perfectly with a morning visit to Zhangjiajie National Forest Park the next day.

Best time to visit

Visit from April to October for mild weather and lush greenery, but avoid Chinese holidays. The best time of day is early morning (before 9 AM) to beat tour groups and catch the mountain emerging from mist. Autumn (September–November) offers crisp air and clear views. Winter can be icy but magical, with fewer crowds.

Tips from our guides

  • Buy your ticket in advance for a specific time slot; morning slots sell out first. Our guides secure these for you.
  • Wear comfortable walking shoes; the 999 steps are steep and uneven. Escalators are available for a fee.
  • Bring a light jacket even in summer—the summit is 5–8°C cooler and often windy.
  • For photography, the glass skywalks offer dramatic angles, but secure your phone with a strap; dropping it is permanent.
  • Avoid the 99 Bends bus if you get motion sickness; take the cable car both ways instead (available on some tickets).
