Tianchi Lake, the 'Heavenly Lake' cradled beneath the snowcapped Bogda Peak, sits at 1,910 metres in the Tianshan range — a sapphire sheet of glacial meltwater framed by spruce forest and alpine meadow. It is Xinjiang's most celebrated natural sight and an easy day trip from Urumqi. With our private guide handling park shuttles, boat tickets and the best viewpoints, you simply soak in the scenery.

Tianchi is a moraine-dammed lake formed roughly 20,000 years ago, when glaciers retreating down the Bogda Valley left debris that blocked the meltwater. The lake stretches about 3.5 kilometres long and 1.5 kilometres wide, with a maximum depth of over 100 metres. For centuries it was known as Yaochi, the 'Jade Pond' where, in Daoist mythology, the Queen Mother of the West held her peach banquets. The name Tianchi — Heavenly Lake — was popularised in 1783 by a Qing dynasty official, and the lake has drawn pilgrims, poets and travellers ever since.
The surrounding Tianshan Tianchi National Geopark was designated a UNESCO Global Geopark in 2013 and holds China's highest 5A scenic rating. Beyond the lake itself, the park protects a belt of endemic Tianshan spruce, alpine wildflower meadows and the glacier-carved peaks of the Bogda massif, which rises to 5,445 metres. The Kazakh herders who summer here with their yurts and horses are part of the landscape's living culture, offering a glimpse of pastoral life that has continued for generations.

Tianchi is about 110 kilometres east of Urumqi, a 1.5-hour drive via the G216 highway. Most foreign travellers join a private car or small tour from their Urumqi hotel; our guide arranges door-to-door transfers so you skip the crowded public bus from the North Suburb Passenger Station. The park entrance sits at the foot of the mountains, where you switch to a mandatory shuttle bus for the final 30-minute climb to the lake. A half-day is enough for the highlights; a full day lets you add the boat ride and a meadow walk.
Peak season (May–Oct): ¥155 entry plus ¥90 shuttle bus, total ¥245. Off-season (Nov–Apr): ¥105 entry plus ¥90 shuttle, total ¥195. Boat ride to the temple is ¥100 return. Opening hours are roughly 08:30–19:00 in summer, 10:00–18:00 in winter. Book via the official WeChat mini-program or Trip.com; foreign cards are accepted on Trip.com, while on-site ticket windows and shuttle counters take WeChat Pay or Alipay linked to an international card.
Late May to early October offers the mildest weather and full access, with July and August the busiest. For fewer crowds and crisp reflections, arrive at opening time (08:30) on a weekday, or visit in late September when the larches turn gold. Winter transforms the lake into a frozen white bowl, but some facilities close and temperatures drop well below freezing.

Yes. With a private car it is 1.5 hours each way, and four to five hours at the lake covers the boat, viewpoints and a short walk. We handle all transfers and timing.
At 1,910 metres, altitude sickness is very unlikely. You may feel slightly breathless on uphill walks, so take the forest trails at an easy pace and stay hydrated.
WeChat Pay and Alipay linked to an international card work at ticket counters and most stalls. Trip.com accepts foreign credit cards for advance booking. Carry a little cash for yurt visits.
Tianchi typically freezes from late November to early April. The winter scenery is spectacular, but the boat ride stops and some trails close, so check conditions with our guide before booking.
