What it is

Opened in January 1977 on a hillside above Aberdeen, Ocean Park began as a marine conservation and education project funded by the Hong Kong Jockey Club. It has since expanded into two main areas — the Waterfront and the Summit — linked by a scenic cable car and the Ocean Express funicular. The park is home to giant pandas, penguins, dolphins, sharks and thousands of fish, and it runs breeding and rescue programmes that have made it a regional leader in marine conservation.

Today Ocean Park is both a theme park and a wildlife-education destination, with roller coasters such as the Hair Raiser and the Dragon, plus immersive habitats like the Grand Aquarium and Polar Adventure. It sits beside the Aberdeen Channel, so cable-car rides offer sweeping sea views. For travellers, it is a full-day experience that pairs easily with a morning at Stanley or a seafood lunch in Aberdeen, and our guides can tailor the route to your family's pace and interests.

Highlights

  • Giant Panda Adventure — See resident giant pandas and red pandas in climate-controlled habitats, with keeper talks that explain conservation breeding and bamboo diets.
  • Cable Car to the Summit — A 1.5-km ride over the headland gives you panoramic views of Aberdeen Harbour and the South China Sea, best in late afternoon light.
  • Grand Aquarium — Walk through a huge domed tank filled with rays, sharks and reef fish, one of the park's most photogenic and calming exhibits.
  • Thrill Rides — The Hair Raiser and Dragon coasters deliver genuine adrenaline with ocean backdrops; our guides time your visit to avoid the longest queues.
  • Ocean Express Funicular — A themed underground train connecting the two zones in four minutes, handy when you want to save time instead of queuing for the cable car.

How to get there

Ocean Park is on Hong Kong Island's south side, about 30 minutes from Central. The easiest route is the MTR South Island Line to Ocean Park Station (Exit B), then a two-minute walk to the main entrance. Alternatively, take a taxi from Central or Admiralty for around ¥100–150. We often pair a morning here with an afternoon in Stanley or Aberdeen, using a private car to avoid backtracking.

Tickets & practical info

Adult day tickets are about ¥480–¥550 (HK$498–HK$560) depending on date and online purchase; child tickets (3–11) are roughly ¥240–¥280. Book online in advance for timed entry and lower prices. Opening hours are typically 10:00–18:00, with extended hours on select weekends. Foreign cards work on the official site, and WeChat Pay or Alipay are accepted at most counters.

Best time to visit

Visit on a weekday in spring (March–May) or autumn (October–November), when temperatures are mild and crowds are lighter. Arrive at opening time to hit the Summit rides first, then work back to the Waterfront shows. Late afternoon cable-car rides offer the best light and shorter queues.

Tips from our guides

  • Buy tickets online before you go and choose a weekday; weekends and mainland holidays bring heavy crowds and longer queues for the cable car.
  • Start at the Summit via the Ocean Express, then return by cable car later — this reverses the usual flow and saves time.
  • Download the official Ocean Park app for live show times, ride wait times and a park map; Wi-Fi is available at entrances.
  • Bring a refillable water bottle and light rain jacket; Hong Kong weather can change quickly, and outdoor rides close in storms.
  • If you have young children, check height requirements before queuing, and use the parent-swap option on bigger rides.
