Mogao Caves

The Mogao Caves are a UNESCO World Heritage site of 735 painted Buddhist grottoes carved into a desert cliff near Dunhuang. Spanning a thousand years, they hold 45,000 square metres of murals and 2,000 sculptures. Our private guide secures your timed entry and brings the stories to life, so you see more than a queue.

What it is

Carved from the 4th to the 14th centuries, the Mogao Caves sit 25 kilometres southeast of Dunhuang in Gansu. A monk named Yuezun began the first cave in 366 AD; over dynasties, patrons—merchants, monks, and rulers—commissioned painted chapels and colossal statues. The site flourished on the Silk Road, where travellers prayed for safe passage. Rediscovered in 1900 with the sealed Library Cave, it yielded tens of thousands of manuscripts, now dispersed across the world. Today it is a masterpiece of Buddhist art and a testament to cross-cultural exchange.

Visitors explore a selection of caves with a guide; the site limits numbers to protect the fragile pigments. The digital exhibition centre in Dunhuang screens films and shows replicas before a shuttle bus takes you to the cliff. Photography inside is forbidden to prevent light damage. The dry desert climate has preserved the art, but conservation is ongoing. For context on the Silk Road, pair your visit with the nearby Yardang National Geopark and Crescent Lake.

Highlights

  • Cave 96 — The iconic nine-storey pagoda houses a 35.5-metre seated Buddha, the largest at Mogao, added during the Tang dynasty.
  • Library Cave (Cave 17) — Sealed around 1000 AD, it held 50,000 manuscripts, including the world's earliest dated printed book, the Diamond Sutra.
  • Tang Dynasty Murals — Caves like 220 and 320 showcase vivid court scenes, musicians, and flying apsaras in mineral pigments that still glow.
  • Northern Wei Caves — Early caves such as 254 feature stark, Indian-influenced narratives, including the famous Sattva Jataka of self-sacrifice.
  • Digital Exhibition Centre — In Dunhuang, immersive films and full-size replicas of restricted caves give context before you board the shuttle.

How to get there

From Dunhuang city, take a taxi or Didi (about ¥50–70, 30 minutes) to the Mogao Digital Exhibition Centre, where you must first watch a film and board the included shuttle bus to the caves. Alternatively, join our private tour with hotel pickup. It pairs well with a morning at Crescent Lake and an afternoon here, or as a half-day trip. Book well ahead in peak season.

Tickets & practical info

Standard ticket ¥238 (includes digital centre, shuttle, and guide-led cave visit); peak season (May–Oct) requires advance online booking via the official WeChat account or website. Off-season (Nov–Apr) is ¥140 and easier to secure. Foreign passports can book with a passport number; payment via WeChat Pay or Alipay linked to an international card is accepted.

Best time to visit

Visit in May, June, September, or October for mild weather and manageable crowds. Avoid China's Golden Week holidays (early Oct) and weekends. Morning slots are cooler and less crowded; the low light also makes the desert colours pop. Winter offers quiet caves but cold temperatures—dress in layers.

Tips from our guides

  • Book your ticket online at least a week in advance, especially for English-language tours; slots sell out fast from May to October.
  • Bring your passport—it's required for ticket collection and entry. The name must match your booking exactly.
  • No photography inside the caves; leave cameras and phones in your bag to avoid a stern warning from staff.
  • Wear comfortable shoes and a hat; you'll walk between caves on uneven ground and stand for about two hours.
  • Consider the ¥200 extra for a special-cave tour (e.g., Cave 285 or 220) if you're an art enthusiast—our guide can arrange it.
