Karez Irrigation System

Beneath the scorching Turpan Depression lies a 2,000-year-old underground network of wells and tunnels that turned desert into vineyard. The Karez Irrigation System, ranked alongside the Great Wall and Grand Canal as one of China's three great ancient engineering feats, is a marvel of Qanat technology. Our private guide brings its ingenious story to life, navigating the cool subterranean channels and surrounding Uyghur villages with ease.

What it is

The Karez system is an ancient underground water conveyance network developed in the Turpan Basin, where rainfall is scarce and summer temperatures soar above 40°C. Using a series of vertical wells connected by gently sloping horizontal tunnels, it taps into groundwater from the Tianshan Mountains and channels it to oasis fields without evaporation loss. This Qanat technology, likely introduced from Persia along the Silk Road over 2,000 years ago, transformed Turpan into a fertile agricultural hub and remains a symbol of human adaptation to extreme environments.

Today, the Karez system is celebrated as one of China's three great ancient engineering projects, alongside the Great Wall and the Grand Canal. Visitors can explore a restored section at the Karez Museum in Turpan, descending into cool underground tunnels to see the water flow and learn about the ingenious construction methods. The site also includes exhibits on Uyghur culture and the region's grape cultivation. Our guides provide context on how this system still supports local agriculture and why it's a testament to sustainable water management.

  • Wear comfortable walking shoes; the underground tunnels have uneven surfaces and low ceilings in places.
  • Bring a light jacket—the tunnels are noticeably cooler than the surface, especially in summer.
  • Photography is allowed but use a high ISO setting due to low light; avoid flash to protect the site.
  • Combine your visit with the nearby Grape Valley and Flaming Mountains for a full day of Turpan sightseeing.
  • Respect local Uyghur customs; ask before photographing people in the surrounding villages.
