What it is

Huanglong Cave (Yellow Dragon Cave) lies in Wulingyuan Scenic Area, about 30 km from Zhangjiajie city. Discovered in 1983 and opened to the public in 1984, it is a typical karst cave formed over millions of years by water dissolving limestone. The cave stretches over 7.5 km, with a vertical range of more than 100 meters, and features a labyrinth of chambers, underground rivers, and stone pillars. Its name comes from the legend of a yellow dragon that once lived in the cave. The cave is divided into four levels, with the Yin River (响水河) flowing through the lowest level, allowing visitors to take a short boat ride. The Dragon King Palace (龙王宫) is the largest chamber, home to the 19-meter-tall 'Dinghai Shenzhen' stalagmite, one of the tallest in China. The cave also contains other notable formations like the 'Dragon Palace' and 'Sky Pillar'. In 1992, it was recognized as a national 4A-level tourist attraction.

Visiting Huanglong Cave is a highlight of any trip to Zhangjiajie, often combined with nearby attractions like Zhangjiajie National Forest Park and Baofeng Lake. The cave maintains a constant temperature of around 16-18°C (60-64°F) year-round, making it a comfortable escape in both summer and winter. The tour route is well-paved with stairs and walkways, but involves climbing over 800 steps, so a moderate level of fitness is required. The underground boat ride on the Yin River is a unique experience, gliding through narrow passages with dramatic lighting. Our guides can arrange tickets in advance, help you navigate the crowds, and explain the geological and cultural significance of the formations. We recommend allowing 2-3 hours for the visit, plus travel time from Zhangjiajie.

Tips from our guides

  • Wear comfortable, non-slip shoes; the cave has over 800 steps and some areas are wet and slippery.
  • Bring a light jacket even in summer—the cave stays around 16-18°C (60-64°F) year-round.
  • Photography is allowed but tripods are not; use a high ISO setting for low-light shots without flash.
  • Follow the one-way route and don't stray from the path; the cave is vast and easy to get lost in.
  • Combine your visit with Baofeng Lake or the Glass Bridge for a full day of natural wonders.
