China Visa-Free for Southeast Asians (2026): Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand & Beyond

Good news for Southeast Asian travellers: Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand passport holders can now enter China completely visa-free for up to 30 days - and several more ASEAN passports qualify through Hainan or group-entry policies. Here is exactly what your passport gets you in 2026.

China Visa-Free for Southeast Asians (2026): Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand & Beyond

Which Southeast Asian passports are visa-free for China?

China now runs one of the most open visa policies in Asia for its Southeast Asian neighbours. The headline rule: ordinary passport holders from Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand can enter mainland China without any visa for up to 30 days, for tourism, business, family visits, exchange or transit. The policy has been renewed repeatedly since 2024 and is currently set to run through at least 31 December 2026 - and given how boldly China is courting ASEAN tourism, extensions have become the norm rather than the exception.

Philippines, Indonesia and Vietnam passports do not (yet) enjoy nationwide visa-free entry - but they do qualify for China's Hainan 30-day visa-free policy, which covers the whole of Hainan province including Sanya and Haikou. All ten ASEAN states can also use a 6-day group visa-free entry to Xishuangbanna (Yunnan) or Guilin (Guangxi) when travelling on an organised tour.

The 30-day visa-free rule, explained

If you hold a Singapore, Malaysian or Thai ordinary passport, you simply book a flight and go. There is no application, no fee and no consulate visit. The 30 days are counted from the day after you land, so a two-week itinerary plus buffer is comfortable. You can enter from any country - the policy does not care where you fly from - and it applies at every open port of entry, whether you arrive in Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu, Guangzhou or Kunming.

The permitted purposes are tourism, business, visits to family or friends, exchange programmes and transit. Work and study still require a proper visa. Border officers may ask for proof of your plans, so keep these handy:

  • A confirmed return or onward ticket out of mainland China
  • Hotel bookings for at least the first nights of your stay
  • A rough itinerary - a printed or offline copy is fine
  • Travel insurance (not mandatory, but speeding up questions at the counter)

Hainan: the visa-free gateway for Philippine, Indonesian and Vietnamese passports

Hainan is China's tropical island province and its freest entry point: 61 nationalities - including the Philippines, Indonesia and Vietnam - may enter all open Hainan ports and stay 30 days without a visa. Crucially for medical travellers, the permitted purposes explicitly include medical treatment alongside tourism and business, and Hainan's Boao Lecheng zone hosts licensed international hospitals.

Sanya and Haikou both receive direct flights from Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, Jakarta, Ho Chi Minh City and Manila, and the island pairs well with a Hong Kong or Macau leg. If your passport is not on the nationwide list, Hainan is the easiest legal way to experience China visa-free.

Group visa-free entry: Xishuangbanna and Guilin for ASEAN tours

Travelling as an organised group of two or more? All ten ASEAN countries can enter Xishuangbanna (tropical Yunnan, bordering Laos and Myanmar) or Guilin (the karst-scape on the 20-yuan note) without a visa for up to 6 days, entering and leaving together with a Chinese travel agency handling the group list. The Xishuangbanna route accepts entry via Gasa Airport and the Mohan rail/road ports - which makes the China section of a Laos-China railway journey remarkably easy.

Arrival day: what actually happens at immigration

  • Fill in the paper arrival card handed out on the plane; in the visa field write VISA FREE
  • Travellers aged 14-70 scan their passport and give 10 fingerprints at the self-service machines before the counter (keep the receipt slip)
  • Hotels register you automatically; staying in a homestay or with friends, register at the local police station within 24 hours
  • Set up Alipay or WeChat Pay with your foreign card before the trip - cash is rarely used

FAQ

  • Can I extend my 30 days? Yes - apply at a local exit-entry administration office for a stay permit if you have a valid reason (medical treatment, for example). Do it before day 30.
  • Does the visa-free entry include Hong Kong and Macau? No - those are separate jurisdictions with their own rules. Many Southeast Asian passports enter Hong Kong visa-free anyway; entering mainland China from Hong Kong still uses the same 30-day policy.
  • Can I enter twice in one trip? Yes, each entry grants a fresh 30 days. There is no published minimum gap between visa-free entries.
  • I'm coming for dental or medical treatment - allowed? On the nationwide policy, yes, as a private visit; in Hainan, medical treatment is explicitly listed as a permitted purpose.
