Bian lian — face-changing — is Sichuan opera's signature magic: performers in gold-sequinned cloaks swap painted masks faster than the eye can follow, in a blaze of fire-spitting, rolling lamps and comic theatre. Every evening in Chengdu, teahouse stages run the show; here is how to pick and book one.

Sichuan opera (Chuanju) is one of China's oldest regional opera traditions — vaudevillian, funny and much more accessible to foreign visitors than Beijing opera. Its best-loved tricks: bian lian (mask-changing, a closely guarded performance craft passed down within troupes), tu huo (spitting fire), and rolling-lamp comedy where a performer keeps a lit lamp balanced while doing acrobatics.
In Chengdu the show typically runs in teahouse theatres — Shufeng Yayun near Chunxi Road being the most famous, with other good stages near People's Park and the Wuhou area — combining opera excerpts, hand shadows, marionettes and the finale everyone waits for.

The main teahouse theatres sit centrally: Shufeng Yayun near Qin Tai metro (a short walk from Chunxi Road), stages around People's Park, and theatres in the Kuanzhai Alleys area — see our Kuanzhai guide. All are metro-or-taxi reachable from any downtown hotel in 10–20 minutes. Shows generally start around 8 pm and run 60–90 minutes.
Tickets typically run from about ¥150 for standard seats to ¥300+ for front rows at the flagship theatres, higher on holidays; book a day or two ahead, and earlier in peak season. Show times vary by venue and season — your guide confirms on the day. Photography is usually allowed except during the face-changing finale at some venues — staff announce the rules. Prices and venues change often, so confirm current arrangements before booking.
Any evening — it is indoors and weather-proof, the perfect plan after a day at the Panda Base or Jinli. Weekday shows are easier to book and less crowded; weekends fill early. Pair with dinner nearby: the theatres sit in Chengdu's best food districts. For season-wide planning, see our Chengdu guide.

It is a trade secret of Sichuan opera — techniques passed to few performers. Hypotheses abound; the troupes are not telling.
