carved into the mountains of northern Guangxi over seven centuries, the Longji Rice Terraces cascade down slopes like giant green ribbons. Built by Zhuang and Yao communities from the Yuan dynasty onward, they drop 800 metres in a single sweep. With our private guide, you'll skip the logistics and walk straight into the most photogenic corners of this living landscape.

The Longji Terraces, also known as the Dragon's Backbone Rice Terraces, were first cut into the hillsides by Zhuang farmers in the Yuan dynasty (1271–1368) and expanded by Yao communities through the Ming and Qing. The name comes from the ridge line that resembles a dragon's spine. Over generations, these paddies have become a masterpiece of agricultural engineering, with gravity-fed irrigation channels that still function today. The area is home to several villages, including Ping'an and Dazhai, each with its own character and viewpoints.
The terraces rise from 300 metres to over 1,100 metres above sea level, creating a vertical drop of about 800 metres. This dramatic elevation change means the scenery shifts with the seasons: mirror-like flooded fields in spring, lush green waves in summer, golden harvest in autumn, and occasional snow in winter. The Zhuang and Yao people here maintain their traditions, from colourful embroidered clothing to the long-hair customs of the Red Yao women. A visit supports the local economy and offers a glimpse into a way of life that has adapted to the mountains for centuries.

From Guilin, it's a 2.5-hour private car or bus ride to the Longji Terraces ticket office, then a shuttle bus to the villages. We arrange door-to-door transfers, so you avoid the hassle of multiple changes. Many travellers combine Longji with a Guilin city stay or a Yangshuo extension. A day trip is possible, but staying overnight lets you catch sunrise and sunset without rushing. Our guide will handle tickets and logistics, ensuring a smooth journey.
Admission: ¥80 (includes shuttle bus from the ticket office to the villages). Cable car at Dazhai: ¥100 round-trip. Opening hours: 24 hours, but ticket sales typically 7:00–18:00. Book through our guide to skip queues; WeChat Pay and Alipay are accepted at the ticket office, and foreign cards can be linked to these apps for payment.
The terraces are stunning year-round, but the best times are May–June for flooded fields that mirror the sky, and September–October for golden rice ready for harvest. Avoid weekends and Chinese holidays for fewer crowds. Early morning and late afternoon offer the best light and fewer tour groups. If you visit in winter, check for snow—it's rare but magical.

A day trip from Guilin gives you about 4–5 hours on site, enough for one or two viewpoints. Staying overnight allows a more relaxed pace and sunrise/sunset views.
