Chengdu for Southeast Asian Travellers: Direct Flights, a 4-Day Itinerary & Food (2026)
Chengdu is now the most-booked Chinese city beyond Beijing and Shanghai for Southeast Asian travellers - and it is the easiest to love: pandas, teahouses, hotpot and mountain day trips, with direct flights from Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok and Jakarta.

Why Southeast Asia has adopted Chengdu
Ask any Southeast Asian traveller which Chinese city they are actually booking, and the answer increasingly is Chengdu. Platform booking data for 2026 puts Chengdu at number five across all five major SEA markets - the highest of any city beyond the traditional gateways - and travel searches from Singapore and Malaysia are growing fastest of all. The reasons are practical: direct flights under five hours, 30-day visa-free entry for Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand passports, and a city that runs on the same frequencies as Southeast Asia - late dinners, strong tea, street life.
| From | Airlines | Flying time | Typical return fare |
|---|---|---|---|
| Singapore | Sichuan Airlines, Air China, Scoot | ~4h 40m | SGD 320-480 |
| Kuala Lumpur | Sichuan Airlines, AirAsia X, Batik Air | ~4h 30m | RM 1,100-1,700 |
| Bangkok | Thai AirAsia, Sichuan Airlines, Thai Airways | ~3h 10m | THB 6,500-11,000 |
| Jakarta | Garuda, Sichuan Airlines (via SIN/KUL) | ~6h+ | IDR 4.5-7.5m |
| Ho Chi Minh City / Hanoi | VietJet, Sichuan Airlines (via CTU hubs) | ~3h 30m | USD 180-320 |
Chengdu Tianfu (TFU) is the newer mega-hub about 50 minutes from downtown by metro; Shuangliu (CTU) is closer to the centre. Both have efficient metro links - grab a rechargeable transit card or just use Alipay's ride code.
A 4-day Chengdu itinerary that actually works
Day 1 - Pandas and old Chengdu. Go straight from the airport to the Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding; the 08:30 entry slot catches the pandas at breakfast, their liveliest hour. Afternoon in Kuanzhai Alleys and People's Park, where the century-old Heming Teahouse charges about RMB 20 for bottomless jasmine tea and ear-cleaning masters ply their trade between the bamboo chairs.
Day 2 - Day trip: Dujiangyan or Leshan. Two easy rail day trips compete for your second day: the 2,280-year-old Dujiangyan irrigation system with Mt Qingcheng's Taoist temples (UNESCO pair, about RMB 80 entry), or the 71-metre Leshan Giant Buddha carved into a river cliff. Both are under 1.5 hours away and bookable as guided Chengdu day tours.
Day 3 - Jinli, Wuhou and Sichuan opera. Morning at Wuhou Shrine and Jinli's replica-old-street snacks, afternoon shopping in Taikoo Li with the giant climbing-panda installation, evening bian lian (face-changing) show at Shufeng Yayun - book front rows, the performers come into the audience.
Day 4 - Market breakfast and depart. Start at a local chaoshou (wonton) or guokui stall, squeeze in Chunxi Road if you have hours to fill, then metro to the airport.
Surviving - then loving - the spice
Sichuan's mala (numbing-hot) flavour is the point, and Southeast Asian palates adapt faster than most. Rules of thumb: order yuanyang (half-mild broth) hotpot on night one, tell servers "wei la" (mildly spicy) and they will take you seriously, and neutralise with bingfen (ice jelly dessert) or a soy milk. If you love heat, the authentic chuan chuan skewer streets and a properly intense hotpot are the two meals worth flying for - our Chengdu food guide maps both.
With 30 visa-free days, Chengdu pairs naturally with western Sichuan's big landscapes: Jiuzhaigou's turquoise lakes (fly 1 hour or drive 8), the Tibetan-flavoured Daocheng Yading trek (2 days overland), or giant Buddhas and tea mountains on loop routes our planners build weekly. Vietnamese travellers already browse our Vietnamese-language site for exactly these routes - Daocheng pages are among the most-visited non-English pages on this site.
One more thing more travellers are adding: Chengdu's healthcare. West China Hospital ranks among Asia's best, and combining a check-up or dental visit with a holiday is straightforward - visas allow it, costs run 50-70% below Singapore, and our medical travel team arranges appointments before you fly.
When to come
- Mar-May: mild, blossoms, best all-rounder
- Jun-Aug: warm with afternoon showers; pandas are most active in early morning
- Sep-Nov: clear autumn light, ideal for mountain day trips
- Dec-Feb: chilly (3-10°C) but low season prices; hotpot season by definition
